Gandhara Art Village, Taxila is a project of Punjab Small Industry Corporation to improve the Local industry of Taxila, specially Stone Product. It will provide the best atmosphere to the Local Industrialists to expand their brand domesticly as well as internationaly.

The purpose of such village for promotion of artwork is being badly neglected as no proper publicity of this place is done while it has space to organise examplery exibitions

Ghandahara art civilization

A lot of artisans are presenting their work. Very good place to see the historic art of cutting stone into various beautiful daily usage and decoration items

It's a historical place

Named quite grandiosely as an "art village", it is just a marble goods manufacturing plant. In fact, if at all, it should be renamed as a "stone-art" manufacturing and display center. Even the main signboard at the entrance only shows specimens of carved stone pieces.

A very responsible senior officer of the government agency that set it up told me that there would be many artisans showing indigenous crafts work - especially garment workers and embroiders. I had specifically gone there to contact such embroiders as my daughter has a clothing-boutique. Unfortunately, it all turned out to be a total waste of time and effort. Indeed, to ensure that I got the benefit of the visit, I called the officer who had referred me to the place informing him that I would be visiting. Even then the so called "emporium" hall was closed and no one was available to open it. I strongly recommend that no visitor goes there - unless the intent is to showcase government failure.

Let alone a visitor center or guide, there was not even an introduction board explaining the intent of setting up this facility nor the hours of operation. It was quite a "visitor-averse" (as opposed to a visitor-friendly place.) Indeed, the purpose of most such projects is to highlight departmental efforts and provide employment to some of the vast number of unemployed citizens (especially those who have a connection to the officials).
