Veit Stoss Altarpiece

Spectacular altar of Wit Stwosz in Krakow. The altar of the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary is one of the most outstanding works of late Gothic sculpture in Europe. Works on the Wit Stwosz altar lasted from 1477 to 1489. The altar was made of three types of wood. The structure is made of hard oak, the background is made of lighter but equally strong larch, and the figures are carved in soft and flexible linden wood. The entire Basilica is magnificent and worth visiting.

Masterpiece of gothic sculpture, and an absolute must when in Krakow. It is the one thing that is in Krakow that you will not find in any other city. The largest gothic altar ever produced by the hand of man. A magnum opus of medieval art. It features a triptych with life-size figures sculpted by master Wit Stwosz in the 13th century. You have to buy a ticket to visit the part of the church where the altar is located, AND it costs extra for a photography permit. All together its really not that much, like 5 or 6 USD, and you're witnessing a masterpiece on the level of Michelangelo's pieta.

This temple is as interesting from the outside as it is from the inside, visit it. I can't say that it is special, but it is worth paying attention to.

This a great wooded altar made by famous artist Wit Stworz. The altar consists of wings which are opened. I used to live in Krakow for over 300 years and strongly recommended to visit!

It’s a large 13th century Gothic style Roman Catholic cathedral in the main square containing a very famous hand carved alter piece from the 14th century by Veit Stoss. We were only permitted to see the church from the back. For a fee we could have seen the alter up close but we decided to pass on that. No photography was permitted.

There are a number of interesting stories associated with this church. The Nazis removed the altar piece and took it to Nuremberg where it was severely damaged. It was returned during the 1950s. Restoration took as long as it had taken Veit Stoss to create it: 14 years.

Every hour a trumpeter plays a short tune that seems to end abruptly from each of the four sides of the highest bell tower of the church. This tradition started in the 13th century. Many people have wondered why the tune is so short and have made up some interesting stories. The most common story says that invading Mongols killed the trumpeter who was trying to sound the alarm. An American writer named Eric P. Kelly spent some time in Krakow and later penned a fictional children’s book called the “Trumpeter of Krakow” which has become the accepted explanation for the brevity of the tune.

Prawdziwa rozkosz dla oka, a dbałość o szczegóły jest nadzwyczajna. Warto wykupić bilet aby znaleźć się bezpośrednio przed ołtarzem.
Ołtarz Zaśnięcia Najświętszej Marii Panny z końca XV wieku autorstwa mistrza rzeźbiarza Wita Stwosza, którego ukończenie zajęło 12 lat. Ołtarz jest tryptykiem, mający 13 metrów wysokości i 11 metrów szerokości, składa się z płyty środkowej i dwojga drzwi – skrzydeł bocznych. Wykonany z trzech rodzajów drewna (całe drewno pochodzi z Puszczy Niepołomickiej). Konstrukcja powstała z twardego dębu, tło wykonano z lżejszego, ale równie mocnego modrzewia, a figury wyrzeźbiono w miękkim i elastycznym drewnie lipowym. Centralna część opowiada o istotnych wydarzeniach z życia Jezusa Chrystusa i Maryi, a sceny wokół ołtarza przedstawiają momenty z Jej życia. Postacie apostołów są wystylizowane na krakowskich mieszczan. Stwosz w podejściu do postaci posunął się tak daleko, że widać dokładnie ich różne ułomności: defekty wyglądu, zdeformowane dłonie, napęczniałe żyły na nogach czy nawet ślady chorób skórnych. Niegdyś ołtarz otwierany był tylko podczas największych świąt kościelnych, na co dzień wierni mogli więc oglądać tylko skrzydła ołtarza zamkniętego. Dziś Ołtarz uroczyście otwierany jest o 11.50, a zamykany o 18.00. Warto również dodać, że nad tym pięknym ołtarzem, jeśli skierujemy wzrok w górę możemy podziwiać ozdobny sufit pomalowany na wzór nieba z żółtymi gwiazdami, wśród pięknych odcieni niebieskiego i zielonego.

Miejsce w którym spotkałem wielu ludzi, niektórzy nawet się modlili. Można tutaj odpalić świeczkę w jakiejś intencji. Zostawić pieniądze na wsparcie katedry która robi dobre wrażenie zarówno za dnia jak i nocy. W środku są figury przy ołtarzu i z boków katedry tuż przy ławkach na wysokości głowy. Wszystko razem prezentuje się pięknie.

Ceci est une oeuvre d'art! Bien qu'elle soit à caractère religieuse (pour ceux qui ne sont pas chrétien) la pièce est magnifiquement taillé et sculpté avec des matériaux riches et divers. Prenez le temps d'allumer un petit lampion sur le chemin de votre sortie.

Polecam zdecydowanie. My mieliśmy to szczęście, że byliśmy przy otwarciu ołtarza, przeżycie niesamowite.
Warto przyjrzeć się tym figurom. Aż trudno uwierzyć ile lat ma ten ołtarz i jakimi sposobami te figury były wykonane. 🤭

Znajduje się w Bazylice Mariackiej. Po renowacji. Wspaniałe dzieło składające się z ołtarza głównego i dwóch ołtarzy bocznych. To trzeba zobaczyć. Wspaniały.
