Sanctuary of the Sacred Heart of Jesus / Mount of Santa Luzia

Architecturally, it is of Romanesque-Byzantine inspiration, fitting into the revivalist architecture that marked the turn of the century. Its imposing rose windows are the largest in the Iberian Peninsula and the second largest in Europe.
You can reach the top of the Monte de Santa Luzia by funicular (elevator), by car or by climbing the steps. This place dominates an important part of the Lima river valley and a large stretch of the seashore to the north and south of the estuary, as well as the green mountain range. This panorama has been rated by the National Geographic Magazine as the third most beautiful in the World.

A beautiful place, not only for the sanctuary which is imposing. But also for its surroundings, where you can find a beautiful garden and even a quiet and beautiful park full of trees. It is good to go out of season to be able to appreciate the views and take good photos.

Breathtaking. A must visit. One of the more beautiful overlooks I have seen. Located on a hilltop in the northern city of Viana do Castelo, overlooking the Lima river valley and the Atlantic coast. You can reach the sanctuary by car, by funicular (fun for the kids) or by climbing the steps from the city if you want a workout.

Really nice place with a beutiful view. You can reach it with cable car from city centre, or by car. Beautiful view on the ocean and city beach.

Another beutiful church perched on top of the hill with stunning views of the coast. Shame the venicular railway was not running but even better viewsd can be got from climbing the tower

A very pleasant church to visit, one of the most attractive spots in the city of Viana do Castelo. The church is beautiful and it is possible to climb (paying) to the top. There is a cable car that takes people near the church, some souvenir shops, a picnic park, an amphitheater and an excellent viewpoint. Along with the Gil Eanes Hospital Ship and the costume museum, it is the most important place to visit in the city.

An epic location for a cathedral. The trip to the top of the tower gives you 360 degree views on a clear day. The steps up will test you ;)

We were almost put off visiting this site as the cable car was closed. The climb was worth it though...beautiful views & even a wedding taking place.
The cafe up there was.also very good and much needed refueling after that climb...

Absolutely beautiful 😍 We had a blast going up to the 🔝! When we were there the elevator was not working so we climbed up the stairs. You need to be able to go up stairs for a good 5 - 10 minutes or maybe more! There is one spot that shows you a green light to go and a red light to stop 🛑 so the ones going the opposite direction can get through because it’s that TIGHT!! But once your up on the top you have an incredible view 😊
We went at sunset 🌅 that made it even more gorgeous! Although a little nerve wracking the beach view is spectacular! 🌟♥🌟
We parked our RV here at the top of the hill no problem about a 5 minute walk from the church!

Beautiful church with panoramic view of the city. You can also enjoy a wonderful sunset from there.

Had the privilege of attending one of the services held in the Sanctuary on the afternoon we visited ❤ What a truly unforgettable once in a lifetime experience.

Funicular was in maintenance, but the road up is in good condition, considering the natural terrain. Worth the visit, the basilica is beautiful and the view of Viana amazing, even on a rainy day.

An amazing view of the town and a lovely Basilica. The drive up is via a winding road and at the top there is parking. If you don’t have a car there is a Funicular from the town to the basilica. Reasonable priced. We parked at the top of the hill and went down to walk around the town - it worked out very well.

This place has an incredible sunset, from where you can see the whole city. Easy access and unmissable. Preferably going on a cloudless day close to sunset. Take the opportunity to visit the majestic church that gives its name to the place.

The architect and view were stunning! Must see it! Use the funicular to get up there!

The Santuário de Santa Luzia in Viana do Castelo, Portugal is an amazing icon of the city with a fabulous dome ceiling.
Please, please, please come here for the gorgeous sunsets and sunset views.
So many people come here to watch the sun sink into the ocean and to see amazing city and river views that it is also a wonderful people meeting and watching place.

Great views, charming atmosphere. I took my chances to use stairs instead of a tram to get here. If you want to do the same, get ready to sweat 😅
