Batik de Kohyao

I bought today two beautiful unique pieces. The owner is very lovely, unfortunately I don’t have the time to do a workshop. Every piece is made with so much love! If you got a sense for handmade batik and art, you should definitely check that out and it’s definitely not overpriced for what you get!

This is such a nice little shop. It's on a really nice road that leads to a pier. It's also opposite a couple of restaurants and down the road from the Safari.
The products are mainly handmade and really good quality and super cheap. You can also do painting on products there too. We totally recommend a visit.

This is such a lovely experience to do and I would highly recommend it! I am a backpacker and have little room in my bag but really wanted to do this as I wanted to learn about Batik but it’s also a unique souvenir to have. The lady and her husband were so kind and understanding - she was able to suggest doing a handkerchief. It was very tranquil and they even provided some food and a drink. Overall I think it’s a wonderful experience to do if you are in Koh Yao Yai :)

When we couldn’t take our long anticipated trip to the Hong islands due to bad weather, we looked for another fun activity on the island and found a workshop batik painting with Like, the ever so kind owner of Batik de Kohyao.

She was so incredibly kind and patient, helped my daughter with designing her own drawing, and then let me do my own design with the wax. Of course I choose something way too complicated for the few hours and 0 experience I had. Learned so much about the technique, and I wish we would have had another full day to work on a larger piece… I guess that’s for next time 😊

This island and it’s people has to be the one of the most beautiful and serene places on this earth. I wanted to learn the art of Batik. Home in Norway I am an artist, so learning the art of Batik was a wish come true for me. I spent two full days painting along side Leik the artist and owner of the Batik shop, getting to know her, her husband Gift and the art of Batik. Leik paints in a traditional Indonesian way with wax melted on a fire , using instruments for the melted wax that looks like little genie bottles . When you place the wax instrument on the fabric you have to have the lightest hand, and it is really really physically hard, and it takes a lot of patience, time and craftsmanship . I have a profound respect for Leik and every Batik artist. Leik was so generous with her teaching and time. She even feed me cute little tasty banana things , and blue flower drinks and all other peculiar unfamiliar things that was really tasty. I feels so lucky that she took such good care of me. I would have forgotten to eat or drink if it was not for her kindness, her her aunts cooking . I spent two full days from morning to night fall painting opposite Leik, and saw how she treated her art and every customer with the most genuine kindness and respect. The shop is a beautiful wooden bungalow filled with her artwork, bags, hats, sunglasses and oils ( The oils is made by the woman in her family )and some delicious coconut pancakes treats. I wish Leik and her family all best for the future, and I feel so blessed that I got to learn the art of Batik in the traditional Indonesian way. I hope that this island continue attracting the same mindful and respectful turists it does today, the turists that are looking for authentic cultural and nature experience, that are respectful and limit their influence and rather learn, experience and enjoy the natural way of life here. That is my wish for this beautiful island and all its generous kind people that has really touched my heart, and that I today is so happy to call my friends.

Wonderful shop full of handmade beautiful treats and garments from the island. We also did a tie dye workshop which was so. much. fun!!! And then proceeded to buy gifts for everyone we know and ourselves. Especially the eco-print pieces are stunning, particularly if you aren't really into the hippie aesthetic. Went twice, already regretting not having gone back a third time.

Amazing place ! A great shop created by a young women how create a lot of things like batik fabric and so many treasures. We loved this place and the family atmosphere!

Quiet and a lovely activity on the island. The owner explains well and the family is very hospitable. They brought home made drinks snd rice with nuts and bananas from the garden. It was a lovely morning well spent.

Really enjoyed ourselves with the Batik painting. The young lady was friendly and kind. It's one of the best activities in this island!
