Wat Thaton

We arrived in time for the weekend celebration of boys joining the monastery. The entire Wat Thaton Chedi complex is built going up the mountain, with large buildings and living units also for rent. The beautiful wat itself is past all of the other buildings at the top of the narrow winding road.

When we arrived families were praying as they walked around the temple. We arrived later at a lower building for a great party. It was the last night that the boys were spending with their families. However the boys and their families all spent that night in the lower complex. As we watch and laughed and enjoyed the happy crowd, we were offered food and cigarettes and alcohol. The boys were carried on the shoulders and transferred from one person to another as party went on. Everyone was very kind to us. It was truly a joy to be part the celebration. We left as it began to get dark and went to a hotel on the river just outside of the center of town. Since our hotel was below the celebration we heard the laughter and music and smiled as we slept.

One of my two favourite modern temple/chedi buildings in Thailand.

Wat Thaton Chedi has been kept very clean and in good condition since it was built. Situated near the Burmese border, atop a steep hill with great views of the countryside, Thaton town and the Kok River, it is a 4 to 5 hour drive due north from Chiang Mai.

Many rooms, artifacts and a museum are spread over the nine floors within, so allow plenty of time for viewing these.

Very highly recommended. Everyone I have taken there has been overwhelmed.

Impressive, you can also go inside and to the rooftop. Inside is a museum and outside an amazing view.

Just a few minutes from the highway.
I was so glad I pulled over and took the time to appreciate this place.
New addition to my favorite places list.

As beautiful as ever, especially the interior of the Chedi. The exterior of the Chedi is currently being renovated, with bamboo scaffolding around the outside. But it is still worth a visit.

The nine levels of enlightenment is worth the trip to Northern Chiang Mai. You'll be surprised by the development of towns after towns after what would otherwise be an obviously not easy ride over the hills, only to be topped off by a temple that allows free overnight stays.
Yes you read that right, you can stay at the temple for free... like a two star hotel!

เจดีย์ที่สูง ในเขตที่ราบลุ่มฝางน้ำกก​ ตั้งอยู่บนยอดเขาชั้นที่ 8 ของวัดท่าตอนพระอาราม ห่างจากชายแดนพม่าไม่ถึง 500 เมตร

Ein schöner Tempel mit viel Liebe und Herzblut errichtet. Schon bei der Anfahrt kam uns ein "schön" über die Lippen und im Inneren des Wat hat es sich bestätigt. Wir sind von Chiang Rai angefahren um uns den Tempel anzusehen. Ob sich der weite Weg für jeden von euch lohnt kann ich nicht sagen. Für uns schon.
