The owner who’s there in the mornings was just so kind and helpful. Chatted about his creative plans for the hostel and the community he’s building, goes out of his way to plan the spaces and the gatherings in the hostel. The breakfast hummus is the best hummus I’ve had in years. And on my way out when I received a call from the police about a bike that had been stolen earlier in my travels, he gladly helped through those phone calls in Mandarin and my bike was reclaimed!

Also I really enjoyed the 4-mattress female’s dorm. Clean, sunny, quiet. The lobby has great vibes, music quietly playing, instruments in the corner, gorgeous murals, many cozy nooks and pillows.

I really enjoyed the two days here at Travel Bug!

I live all over the world and honestly this is one of my favorite hostels of all time. A relaxed, low-key yet active and social place.

The vibe as you can see is bright, fun and spacious. The kitchen is nice and large and well stocked. Breakfast of fruit, toast and coffee is included. The dorms are normal yet nice, with curtains. There are lots of bathrooms and even more showers. Laundry machine is available for low price. There is a backyard with hammocks and space for tables and room for making nicer. There is a rooftop but it isn’t really in use and has great future possibilities. The lounge area is wide open with lots of space for sitting / chilling / lounging and has games, books and even a piano. Hao-Wei and others have guitar and instruments and sometimes in the evening local people come by to sing / jam. The only thing that keeps me from giving location a 5star is that this, like most of the hostels, is located on the main road and so there is more road noise than if it were on another street. That being said, wearing ear-plugs or taking an internal room are options, and I slept well both nights.

Hao-Wei / Nick, Julia and Larry are all friendly, kind and considerate. Flexibility and humanity, not rigidity is a breath of fresh air; I originally paid for three nights, then plans changed and I left after two. Hao-Wei didn’t even bat an eye as he refunded me for the last night.

Going right along with the hosts’ relaxed, kind energy, all of the other visitors were also very low-key and considerate. People were quiet at night, friendly but not overwhelming during the day and just enjoyable to be around.

And as you can see, there are plenty of friendly cats around :).

Really this is justttt the vibe I look to find whenever I’m stopping anywhere. Well done friends! If I may, in the future I’d like to come help you make it even more excellent.

This is the best hostel to meet other travelers! I really enjoyed my stay, made a lot of friends to explore together, and enjoyed the comfortable accommodation. Highly recommend!

I. An really recommend this hostel! I have really nothing to complain. The owner ist really friendly, all persons who work there was really nice, the showers (specially the showers in the 3 floor) was one of the best showers since a long time, beds are comfortable, AC, clean, you can use the kitchen, there is sometimes some free vegetables which the owner get from a friend who grow them by himself, breakfast is included!!! (Toast, 3 different sweet creams, 1 self made humus, fruits and oats), free tea the whole day and the socialising area is really great. Really comfortable couches and much space. There is a piano, drums, guitars and some more instruments. If you are a musician is it perfect!

The city itself is really relaxed and I loved the beach. It’s black volcanic sand and it’s really empty.

Nice hostel, very friendly staff. Has a strong surfer/yoga type vibe but that's easily avoided if it's not what you're into. My dorm bed wasn't super comfy but not bad either, the curtain did little for privacy though. No keys for the building or room so if you want to keep stuff secure a locker is your only option and they aren't huge but if you're traveling reasonably light you could put everything in there. Showers and toilets were nice and very clean.

My suggestion would be to put some furniture up on the roof, it's a great place to sit to watch the sunset and stars if it's clear.

Really casual, relaxed and friendly place. Staff were very nice and welcoming. They let us bring our bikes inside from the rain. Very quiet in the day and lively in the night, good to meet people from around the world. Breakfast is just toast and condiments, tea and coffee but good enough. Rooms are spacious and beds fine. Would definitely stay here again and recommend this place to friends.

The owner and hostel cool and laid back. Treats staff and clients with respect. Very Friendly. Very clean.. Very groovy . Free toasts for breakfast and free laundry facility and drinking water. English is spoken by most staff.. Good mix of nations. Good music. Nick can help you find food, surf, or whatever you need. Lots of instruments , books,to enjoy in comfortable hang out areas. Truly caring. Not a loud hostel but also not boring . Great low rates..Best location on main road. spot on. Best place In Dulan.

Had a wonderful experience staying at the Travel Bug Bistro two years ago. Back again and very little has changed besides a new paint job. Casual and welcoming atmosphere, kind hearted boss with lovely staff. Simple bunk bed dorms or private double rooms, all kept nice and clean.

A hostel where you can end it up calling it home ❤ Highly recommend it to everyone looking for a vibrant atmosphere and chill location at Taitung.

Great atmosphere. Staff are really inviting and friendly. Very clean hostel with quality beds. Hosted show/movie night. Excellent wifi. Have food and drinks in-house or some other option of other restaurants near by.

I love it, the place is so cozy and the staffs are so nice to us, and quite funny too! 😉 And i think the place is ideal for backpackers, there are few restaurants nearby, some snacks or drink shops also there's 7-11 too! The most important thing is there are some supplies stores right beside the hostel, so in case you forget to bring something, you can just buy them right away :) i also think the price range around the hostel (from stores to restaurants) is quite affordable, not too cheap but also not too expensive :))

About traffic condition, i think it's quite busy from noon til evening, because many families or tour groups have to continue their way since it's the only way from/to Taitung :) i suggest if you are planning to to use a car, don't go down the road at evening, because the traffic will get kind of stuck 😂

As a surfer I thought about staying at the surf hostels but looking at the photos and atmosphere I chose Travel Bug. Price wasn’t really an issue so I was looking for a place that would be busy, fun and welcoming but I also needed it to be accessible to a surf rental place. There is one across the street called Wa Ga Li Gong which I also recommend for rentals and apparently they seem like the only surf place that takes you super early to Jinzun. Comparing the two places though I am so happy I picked Travel Bug because the vibes were so positive, music instruments everywhere, Nick the owner is amazing. He is like a walking ray of sunshine. If you like peace and quiet upstairs has the library retreat, if you want to meet people the main area is perfect for that. So many people walk by and look inside this hostel because it’s that welcoming and fun. Also if you are a clean freak, I saw them do a thorough cleaning during the day, changing the sheets and blankets covering the day beds and couches. The floors are so clean. Pick this place! Trust me when you walk on the main road in Dulan and you pass by this hostel, you will wish you stayed there. If you want to meet surfers, I just easily walked over to Wa Ga Li Gong and made friends there.

Nick is an amazing host! He makes everyone feel at home and helps them in any way he can. The place is really spacious, well-decorated, and has an awesome atmosphere for travelers... It's easy to meet people and everyone becomes friends. I'll come back someday :)

Such a cool place. Everyone is so friendly and positive. Great place to hang out and meet new people. 10 minute walk from the beach.

If you stay 3 or more days they will also let you use their washing machine.

Best hostel on the east coast. Chill vibes and great atmosphere. Even if you aren't staying in the hostel it's a great place to go hang out and have a drink. Nick is super awesome

Such friendly staff and an inviting environment to hangout in. Comfy beds, clean rooms, good value for money, and easy to meet fellow travelers here. Best hostel I stayed at in Taiwan!

Great 2 night stay in a private room with double bed. Friendly staff, relaxed environment, free laundry, coffee/tea/water all supplied, and hummus for breakfast in the morning was delicious! Thanks!

Location was nice, close to the beach and a nice vibe in the night with live music.

A well run place to enjoy the chill-out vibe. And staffs are superb always with a big smile. And it's very helpful that they provide many local advice to help the traveler getting around the area easily.

Travel bug made me fall in love with Dulan. The people, the ambience, the joy and excitement - I will definitely miss this place when I leave :(

If you're looking for a place with good music, good people, good beer, this is where you have to stay! No doubt the reason why this little town is so lit!
