So I opened a checking account here many years ago because they do not charge fees for using overseas ATMs. This was GREAT until they introduced a new $29 monthly fee for having a balance under $5k. Since I only use the account when I travel, and hadn't traveled since COVID, they started charging me $29 every month, for 14 months. This added up to almost $400. They were apparently perfectly comfortable doing this, with no need to notify me. I am sure that I naively "agreed" to any change in fees when I opened the account, so this would not actually break any laws.
I called them, and to their credit, they agreed to return 12 months' worth of the 14 months of fees.
I drove to the branch to try convincing them to return my money. The employee offered to ask his manager about it, but let me know that it was unlikely to get my money back.
I closed the account. If I can't trust a bank not to steal from me under legal pretenses, I can find another bank.
