John Medica Gardens (California Historical Landmark #939)

Gated to protect from deer. Rarely open to public. Very creative. An amazing creation taking decades to complete. Used to ride bikes in the 70s-80s here and talk with Mr. Medica. He was always so nice and let us walk through the garden he was so proud of. Happy that California designated this a historic landmark.

This place contains a remarkable work of folk art, encompassing about 4 acres of trails and hand-made concrete masonry in the form of miniature castles, fountains, archways and bridges, which was constructed over the course of 20 years by the Croatian turkey farmer John Medica. It used to be a very special part of east Santa Rosa's historic and unique charm. Sadly, it fell into some disrepair, was not effectively conserved or managed, suffered vandalism and neglect, and was then gated off some years ago. It is now inaccessible except to the homeowners of the large "Tuscan villa" homes that encircle and surround it.
