Captain + Stoker

My one stop I never skip when going to Monterey or pebble beach. This is the best coffee place. Easy parking outside, friendly service and the best coffee drinks, tea and food. They redid some of the inside, it was a pleasure to return again, as always. Even my big group order was done quickly and with a smile. I know it gets more busy on the weekend, but it’s worth it!

Stumbled upon this lovely coffee shop while looking to burn a couple hours while in the area. I could not have found a better place to go! The coffee was so fresh and delicious, the staff was very friendly. I inhaled the banana peanut butter toast without taking a photo, the presentation was phenomenal. I was able to cozy up next to the windows with my coffee, answer some emails on their WiFi, and enjoy the fabulous Monterey morning. Highly recommend!

After a less-than-ideal initial experience, Tyler from Captain & Stroke reached out and addressed my concerns with genuine care. Not only did he rectify the issue by sending a new bag of coffee, but he also included an extra bag and a thoughtful note (not to mention a cool octopus sticker). This level of customer service is rare and truly appreciated. I’m now not only a subscriber to their coffees but also a dedicated visitor whenever I'm in Monterey. A big thank you for turning my experience around!

I visited Captain & Stroke Coffee yesterday with my wife. I love buying local roasters' coffee wherever I travel, and if I like it, I subscribe to their coffee.
We had a pretty good pour-over, a Guatemala and an Ethiopia coffee, both single-origin light roasts. The tastes were good, except I wasn’t sure the Ethiopia was exactly light roasted, due to the texture and balance. I specifically asked at the register for a bag of Brazilian coffee named Cold Soul, inquiring if it was light roast and was told it absolutely was.
Today, I opened the bag and was upset by what I found inside. It’s medium-roasted, which is still okay, but there are burnt beans. Even though I tried to remove burnt beans and make pour over. I still can taste burnt taste. What a disappointment! You can check the photos I uploaded, compared to SEY's light roast.
Overall, my advice would be it's an amazing coffee shop around Monterey Bay, but I don’t recommend buying their bags of coffee with these burnt beans.

Large, yummy lattes - spacious, open seating. Be sure to come hungry as the menu has a range of sweet and healthy options. Super friendly staff, dog friendly... free treats by the napkins for pups.

A very nice shop with friendly staff, very good specialties coffee (had two flat white)and a really tasty croissant (Sammys Croissant) with egg, avocado, cheese and ham. 100% recommended. Really nice place.

Fairly quick service considering the line on a weekday morning. Great desserts and coffee! Super cute place, on the smaller side. On the pricier side.

Amazing vibe and even better lattes. Thoroughly enjoyed the morning air flowing through, surf comp playing on the projector, and great music selection playing. Staff was super friendly as well.

A chill and rad little coffee spot in downtown Monterey! I enjoy their espresso and a variety of their roasts. I get my beans here, almost exclusively, and like to stop in for a morning coffee every so often. They also have some delicious food options and excellent service! Great quality place!

Wow - delicious espresso & coffee, amazing service, great atmosphere, food was super yummy…can’t say enough good things about Captain + Stoker! Our lattes were not only delicious but they were works of art! The barista perfectly steamed both dairy and nondairy milk, the espresso of course was fabulous. The team working behind the counter was knowledgeable and very kind. Bonus points for the cool bikes and ambiance. Highly recommend!

What a coffee shop! We smiled as soon as we entered this breezy and airy space: suspended bicycles, huge garage door, reclaimed wood table and plenty of seating. Such a California vibe all over. Pour over was delicious as was the iced tea (bonus points for large ice cubes and elevated glasses). We joked that if we ever opened a coffee shop, this would be the feeling we’d like to recreate. Props!

It’s a wonderful mini of the Captain
and Stoker in Monterey. They have Sam and other great people working and even though I spent less than 10 minutes
there, I can’t wait to visit again. It would only be better if there was room for seating but maybe they will expand!

Just delicious! The almond croissant I ordered was enormous, perfectly pillowy on the inside, yet still flaky and crisp on the outside. Cortado perfect as well. Good place for a quick grab and go breakfast, or to sit and work awhile. Well behaved dogs hanging out inside too ♥

Very cute coffee shop. Staff were so friendly and patient. They also offered great reccomendations for coffee. My husband ordered the vanilla cappuccino and I ordered from the specialty menu, the honey lavendar latte. Both tasted great! We also both got the avocado toast. The sourdough was very obviously homemade (or at least sourced from an excellent baker), hearty and tasty! Generous avocado spread, topped with arugula, pepper flakes, and a lime on the side. One slice should hold you over until lunch, but they do offer two slices for a slight discount. I'm sure we will be eating here again during our week long visit in Monterey.

LOVE this place. Every single person working there was so kind and happy. Such a good energy. Had a great cappuccino and the crossaint sandwhich was so good.

Love this place! I reached out to my Facebook community for recommendations for coffee in Monterey and heard this is the best place on the peninsula. Breezy, with ocean air, lots of plants and surfer decor, and really incredible coffee, pastry, and service. There is lots of free parking right outside the shop, and lots of space inside to sit and drink from a real mug. There is a bike pump in the corner and a tin of dog treats on the counter - thoughtful touches that won me over.

We passed by during our stay in Montray. Friendly service. Fresh, tasty drinks.

Great little cafe to visit, it’s a little bit off the beaten track but well worth it when you get there with its big open shutter doors and high ceilings it has a lovely airy relaxed feeling about it. The food is not the norm, but in a good way, making it unique and delicious. Got to be a must if your in Monterey.

Phenomenal shot of espresso on an amazing espresso board (sea pic) - all the toast was great. Even just a plain piece of toast. And to finish it all off the drip coffee was a beautiful blend and so tasty.

Great place to grab a coffee in Monterey. Good 3rd wave coffee that won’t disappoint.

This place is really good!! Fantastic standard drinks (I'm a hit-or-miss with specialty drinks in general), and their food & pastries are fantastic. It does get pretty crowded, and I don't remember if they have chargers for those who want to study there, but it's a really nice place to have breakfast with your friends!
