I'm pretty shocked at the reviews people are leaving here. Most of them seem to comment based on no knowledge on the place at all. This cemetery is likely historically the 2nd most important cemetery in Miami. Only after the Miami City Cemetery in downtown. This cemetery's conditions are attributed to being the one place, aside from a second nearby cemetery, where back in the day black folk could afford an honorable burial. This is where the wealthiest black man and Miami's first black millionaire and FOUNDER is entombed. Many black war veterans from WWII are buried here. The county's first black officers. Needless to say many historically significant people are buried here. Because of segregation, and county zoning (based on race etc) the past owners have had to make good use of the land. It is not uncommon for grave lots to entomb multiple family members one on top of another, but because of over flow and a very high water table they at one point had to bury them in cement tomb/sarcophagi above ground. This area should be zoned historic. Instead the county has neglected/mistreated its owners for decades making them resort to volunteers from various non-profit groups that have helped conditions significantly since 2015. It may be in private hands and not a city cemetery but what we need is this place funded and well maintained.

Very interesting. I wish we would read about more educational articles like this.

This cemetery is in horrible conditions. Where is the city to step in and bring order!! My heart aches seeing all these resting souls living in a unkept environment. So much historical presence and this is how they choose to honor it. So sad

This cemetery is in need of a major facelift and perpetual maintenance plan. My great grandmother is buried here as well as Miami's first Black millionare (Mr. Dana Albert Dorsey; 1872 - 1940; who once onwed Fisher Island), Congresswoman Gwendolyn Sawyer Cherry, Esq. (1923 - 1979; first Black law student at the UofM, first Black female to practice law in Miami, and first Black female legislator in Florida), Black war Veterans, and other historic individuals with connections to Miami's Black Heritage. It would be a great stop on the QCT Miami Black Heritage Tour and Freedom Ride Tours.

Please do not burry your loved ones here, My dad was having an affair with the owner of this property so as a small child I would have to come with my dad because he worked there as well. This places is horrible and the workers get paid under the table. not only that but I have saw on multiple occasions of bodies being berried on top of each other, did it ever question your mind why the tombs are on top of the ground? it is because there are many bodies kept on top of each other beneath. trust me. do not go here this place does not even deserve ONE STAR

The county or the city or the state should step in and either preserve, restore , maintain or get rid of it!

Disgusting place, all dirty and abandoned in the middle of a dark, abandoned and creepy neighborhood, it is incredible that such a place exists in the heart of Miami

You must really hate your relative to bury them there. It’s neglected and it looks like a dump.
