Mary's Pit Bar BQ

Food always good! So good that this last time my potato was hard, undercooked, and nasty, I still wasn’t mad. Because 95% of the time that isn’t the case. Been going to Mary’s for years. Never a problem, never unsatisfied until this last time but like I said that’s not normal. I’ll still go back for more but hopefully this was the last hard, undercooked, nasty potato I ever get!

Been eating this barbecue for 62 years. Best barbecue I have ever had. Still tastes just like it did 62 years ago. Just wish it were not so far away!!

I have more than a passing bit of interest in BBQ. Since moving to Huntsville, the BBQ restaurant experience has been underwhelming at best. I've heard of Mary's Pit BBQ on local social media but haven't taken the back road adventure time to try and find it. My wife and I were out today looking for yard sales and I saw this place pop up on GPS right around noon and I knew it was a sign. Of course we stopped! I knew it was about to get real real when I saw the screen door. I ordered a large pork sandwich "all the way" which included what seemed like two entire shoulders worth of the most perfectly pulled pork I've ever seen, vinegar slaw, pickles, and hot BBQ sauce. There was just enough slaw and sauce to know it was there, but the star of this show was the meat. Not too smoky, tender, and taken off the pit at the exact temp window to produce that absolutely perfect pulled texture that is what I strive for with every cook I've ever done. After eating, I had to talk with the cook, and could immediately tell that she not only loves what she does, but she loves BBQ in a way that very few people I've ever met do. She even gave us sample cups of their banana pudding and peanut butter pudding - I didn't even know it was a thing, but it was delicious! No pics of the food, but if you're ever in the Gurley area in the northeastern part of Madison County, Alabama and want some BBQ that will feed your soul as well as your body, you have to go to Mary's Pit BBQ.

Saw a story on my phone about Mary's and had to try didn't disappoint. Sandwiches are big, and for the bigger appetite the have large size ones. Also the chili dogs are an old school treat.

Had the pull pork sandwich and the spicy slaw hot dog was very satisfied they have some of the best slaw around and the pull pork is actually smoked not mass produced as a bbq business owner myself I tend to try other places while I'm traveling and I'm glad I came across this place there in the Alabama BBQ hall of fame and I can see why great place

I had a hankering for Barbecue for lunch and thought of Mary's pit barbecue. Google that and I was amazed the they were open on Sunday. I almost spilled my coffee running out the door. Got a 1/2 chicken plate with beans and potato salad and tried the peanut butter banana pudding for the 1st time . I believe I could have eaten more of that pudding it was so tasty

I've tried bbq all over the South. Mary's is still the best. I've eaten here since I was four years old.

I know a thing or two about authentic 'que and this is it! But today when I stopped in for lunch their credit card system was down and I didn't have any cash. Do you know that they fed me and just said to pay them when I come back through? And I'm not even a regular! But I should be...

I discovered this through a small mention in a book called Extreme BBQ and realized we lived close to Mary's after moving to Scottsboro Al. We had a smile on our face when we saw the place. True, honest bbq. Prices were fair, service was fantastic. All the sides we got were great(mac & cheese, green beans, mayo slaw, vinegar slaw and baked beans is what we got). It's hard to choose between the slaws, because they are both awesome! But the star of the show were the ribs. They were perfect. I didn't need any dental floss and they weren't fall apart mush either. The sauces are all great. We'll make stopping here a tradition when going to Huntsville!

I have tried every single bbq place in Madison county. This is not only the best bbq I have had in North Alabama, but the best bbq I have had period. This is the best kept secret in North Alabama by far. I will drive from Village of Providence in Huntsville to Gurley every single time I want bbq now because there is no competition for Mary's. Customer service was amazing, the food was melt in your mouth good, huge portions, and the prices are more than reasonable. If you haven't had the pleasure of eating at Mary's then you are missing out

This place is awsome,highly recommend. Take the time and the drive but its truly worth every bite. You will not regret the decision.

Mary’s BBQ has been around a long time and throughout they years they have served great BBQ time and time again so I’m always happy to eat there.

This is my favorite BBQ place. The pulled pork is perfect. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Definitely a small place with more dining area on the picnic tables outside than at the small lunch counter type bar on the inside. It's a little off the beaten path as it took us 6 minutes off of Hwy 72 to get there. The best part is that this is genuine BBQ and you can tell by the smell as soon as you get out of your vehicle. Food was great and I will stop again when I am in the area.

I'm from Huntsville, but I've had good home-cooked country BBQ and this is it! Great food, reasonable prices, great portions, all the fixins and excellent service. If you're ever near Gurley and you're hungry, they will feed you like family. I just about have to go take a nap now. 10/10 will be returning.

Mary's was my late dad's favorite BBQ place. Food is good and made in house. They don't use commercial foods. Pulled pork has good smoke flavor and doesn't need anything extra. Ribs are tender but not falling off the bone. Sides are good with their potato salad being my favorite.

Mary’s BBQ pit has been around for as long as I can remember. The customer service is excellent. They do their best to get orders out quick and get them right. The food is awesome, the cooks do an amazing job with seasoning, and cooking .

Mary's is my favorite place for bbq chicken, pork, and all of the fixins!! Their potato salad is AWESOME!! The food is always fresh and it's DEFINITELY worth the drive!! Their prices are more than reasonable, meaning you'll get your money's worth, plus some. The owner is one of the most friendly and hardworking guys you'll come across, and most days you can find him there in the pit overseeing the meat to insure that it's cooked to perfection. He won me over a few years ago when I happened to have my dog with me. I was trying to get out of the car to run inside and pick up my order real quick while leaving my dog in my vehicle with the a/c running when this man happened to step out of the employees door, greet me, notice I had my "partner in crime" with me, and he said "bring him inside. He's welcome here, too. And I've got a treat for him." So I grabbed my dog (on leash) and we walked inside where we were welcomed by all of the employees and then he was presented a big, FRESH rib bone of his own. Now my dog literally knows the phrase "do you want to go to Marys?", jumps into the car, and enjoys the wind in his fur on the roadtrip, gets out and walks inside where he gets pats on the head by whoever is there, then patiently waits for his rib bone that he knows Daniel has for him. He considers Mary's his home away from home, even though we're only there for 5-10 minutes picking up our food to go. Of course, I also give him the meat from a chicken leg and thigh for his dinner once we're home. His rib bone lasts him for days and he ignores all other bones when he has one. Needless to say, the two of us make the journey to Mary's Pit BBQ 2-3 times a week and they're closed on Mondays and Tuesdays!! Obviously, my 🐕 isn't the only one that considers it our go to place for dinner on the nights I don't feel like cooking!!

If you’re wondering if you should try it out, just do it! Don’t be wimpy. Best barbecue hands down. It’s not just good, it’s guuuuud! And I swear to god almighty himself that the banana pudding is on point! (They must sprinkle crack on the nanna pudding, cuz I keep coming back for more!)
