This is a hilly, picturesque space where people can spread out to hike, picnic, swim, or look for frogs, dragonflies, and eagles. The park is in a loop with lots of little parking lots, each one with an entirely different view of the lake, and it didn’t feel remotely crowded. Will definitely be back to explore again! There’s so much more to do.

well maintained, beautiful, peaceful state park with a small beach, clean and lots of toilets, showers! Camping is closed for the season and the leaves have fallen so we really can't tell between sunny or shady spots, but all seem nice with plenty of water sources

The lake is beginning to look really good. Only fish and release seems to be allowed as per signs that are posted. Docks were not in the water but new ones are sitting in yhe parking lot at the old concession stand.

I didn’t expect much because we were informed the lake wasn’t full yet and therefore was closed for water activities, but I was pleasantly surprised. I’m a camping newbie though, so I’m not sure if to others, these qualities don’t seem as great as they do to me.
The lake was almost full. We took a hike around it. The views were great. The campground was great too. There was a fire pit, outlets, table and benches on our reserved spot. We had bathrooms and showers very close by. I enjoyed my stay very much.

I'll be coming back to this place for sure. It's very peaceful, very clean and organized. You need to register with the host once you get there if you're planning on camping - which I highly recommend. Make sure you bring cash, $10 a night, but even if you don't, there's a convenience store 3 minutes away by a car with an ATM inside. The beach was closed, so you can't swim in the lake, but there are many other ways to enjoy it.

While I normally love this place, a tree fell on my tent and I lost my tent and deposit! Now I gotta save for another tent.

We have been going to this park for years. I am both sad and excited for the closure next year. Can't wait to see the improvements but sad we won't be able to camp here. There are several decent hiking trails nothing too strenuous. It is a very enjoyable time when we are here. I do recommend coming here.

This park is lovely. Facilities are clean, campsites are nice Beach and boating are currently not available. Main hiking trails were wide and well maintained. Spotted a few side trails that we chose to skip as they were quite overgrown. Would happily return.

What a great little state park and excellent campground. This had probably the cleanest bathrooms i have seen in a campground and i have seen a lot. Nice campground at the top of a hill. It had been raining like crazy for days before we came - i was worried it might be muddy from the rain but the way it is situated it was just fine. Plenty of sites, each had its own electrical box. I have never been to a campground where you registered with the host, it was refreshing to have such a friendly welcome to the campground. This was probably the friendliest campground i have been too. Met quite a few neighbors and had some nice conversations. Met one couple who had been camping there for 42 years! Another couple said this was their third trip this season. It turned out to be a great place to take my two toddlers on their first camping trip. It was an easy drive from the Chicago suburbs, and only 3 miles from town. There was a beach at the state park - we checked it out early in the morning and i don't know if it was just calm waters or due to all the heavy rains last week, but there was a lot of algae in the water. My toddlers like to drink the water they swim in, so we drove 5 minutes into town and there was an awesome public pool with water slides, a baby pool and sand area. It was 13 bucks for me and 2 kids. Perfect!
When we drove back i saw a lot of people at the beach so it must not have been bad. I assume once all the water started moving around a bit the algae probably dissipated.
I saw a lot of complaints about the road. I drive a Honda civic and it was fine. There were some rough patches and some potholes but nothing that my car couldn't handle going slow. It looked like they had filled some rough spots with sand to help smooth it out a bit, and there were signs and poles warning about the rough road. It certainly wouldn't stop me from coming back.
There were a few playgrounds that were nice for kids, but they were not super close to the campground. Lots of nice shelters and picnic areas, saw a lot of groups enjoying time outdoors.
If you are looking for a well kept, friendly campground this is it. From what i heard from the host and neighbors is most weekends it has open sites - i didn't make a reservation ahead of time because i wanted to pick my site when i got there. I will be back.

Came here for our annual hike for camp. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Trails were great, mostly wooded which offered reprieve in the 90degree Chicago weather. They had a playground, swimming area and many large pavilions for lunch. The kids had a great time.

The location is perfect. The camp hosts are friendly. Our campsite was large and roomy for our large tent and we had room for the kids to play. Bummed that the beach was closed but it was due to an algea bloom. The fishing was fantastic! The night sky was incredible. We could see the dust of the milky way and the occasional satellite pass by. We were lucky enough to be there during the Persied Meteor Shower. On a peak night, no less. That was so cool to see!!
We made reservations for a few trips. We will be back in a couple weeks and then again a few weeks after that. The family is excited to make the trip out again!!!

Years ago this was one of the best little bass lakes in the state . I caught so many 4 and 5 pound bass it was crazy . The park is great for camping and is always clean and plenty of facilities to shower or go to the bathroom. They had an excellent little restaurant and bait shop, but like everything else in this world things change., the CARP took over the lake and ruined the bass fishing and the panfish populations declined as well. I am glad they got a grant to
Renovate the lake and park . They totally drained the lake to kill all the Carp ! Thank you! I hope the lake returns in coming years to a great little fishing spot that it was. So many great memories of catching some real dandy bass in that state park and lake.

We have been camping here twice. It is a nice campground and has some of the nicest bathrooms we have encountered at different sites. The non electrical sites are nice as well and a little more excluded but tent camping at the electrical sites is fine if you dont being around mostly rv campers. The stage is also unique and has music and sunday services at least both times we have been there. The hiking at the park is very nice as well. The beach was closed one year and this year it was open but not very swimmable due to lots of algae but beach was clean for the kids to play and they also have other areas for fishing and a boat launch.
