TOPS Friendly Markets

I've shopped at the downtown Tops for 37 years. I like the store and its modifications and reorganization of products, and many staff remain after 25 years. I have recently become a fan of self checkout. Self checkout, in many stores now, is a personal choice...it is not intended to lessen the job of the store employee; its benefit is to allow ourselves to not be impatient with the pace of another person, we can only be annoyed with ourselves if we are the ones scanning and bagging as we control our own speed. But, sometimes technology isn't in our favor. This is where there are issues because if you scan a large object and put it back into the cart or on the floor, it stops your progress and sounds that annoying "brrrgg" noise, and either commands you to "put object in the bag" 22 times (funny only at first), or asks you to consult the attendant. Most attendants are watchful and monitor fully to bypass the alarm and are fairly cheerful; however there's one young lady that merely stands there and talks to other staff about her water bottle and is self absorbed to the point of necessitating that the patron leave their cart to ask for assistance. That is not customer service and is not suitable for the typical quality of this store, she needs more training soon for the benefit of the store and the patron experience. The store's food and paper product variety is good, the produce section is always being monitored and refilled, the deli folks are pleasant, the butchers go out of their way to accommodate patrons; ie. there was 1 ham left at Christmastime, and 2 patrons waiting, and the butcher cut it in half to satisfy both. Another time they had a huge rush on a cut of meat on special, and the butcher priced a much more expensive cut for me to match the special that had sold out. That's wonderful service in a community-centered grocery. Dairy, bakery, and stockers are always pleasant and ask how you are doing, and the customer service department is expedient. I have to include the cart men who drag all those wet, cold, snowy carts inside for us. I also enjoy how the store allows nonprofits to be of service for the good of the community, ie. Salvation Army bell ringing and singing in the entryway. The Tops points for gas perk is of great value also! I live in Lansing and work near to Tops on Triphammer, but will drive downtown to shop at the Meadow Street store. Thank you Tops! You may be less fancy than your next door neighbor, but you're still my first choice.

Tops is the place to go if you want to shop in peace and avoid all of the hectic chaos at other grocery stores in town.

The staff is awesome and friendly, so it must not be the worst place to work!

Perhaps my favourite grocery store in Ithaca. You might find this the closest to Wegmans in terms of inventory. However, it is more economical and has a narrower spectrum of inventory in terms of vegetables. They have a really good selection of groceries with items from across the globe. Being a vegetarian, I find TOPS to be a very good place to shop since I find all my essentials here. The have a good bunch of bakery items ranging from rye bread to croissants. The best part of TOPS happens to be their frozen pizza. The Quattro Formaggi pizza at tops is just too delicious. Their golden sweet corn is the best among all brands that I can find in Ithaca. The only thing I find missing are the green Thai peppers. I would give a 5+ if they start selling it.

I was there last three days arouns 7 pm i was looking for maizena an associate called lauren helped me by calling tops in the mall that apears they had it but not in the store downtown. Well thank you lauren for your great customer service

Personally I prefer Tops over Wegmans. The sales are great and the college students do go here. This makes it perfect.

If Walmart doesn't have it, Tops does. It has a great selection of many things. The Western Union here is top notch.

My go-to store in this part of Ithaca. Yes, the other store is great too; but Tops is a perfect supermarket, with reasonable prices and good loyalty deals, and it is indeed super friendly.

I don't shop here a whole lot (because they are so much more expensive than Wal Mart) but when I do I receive very good customer service. Everyone is always so pleasant.

It's a good store. Their produce is much better than it used to be, and they have actual cashier's.

Shop here every Saturday. The staff is consistently easy to deal with. Great store. Job well done by them

Triphammer location is a must for people living in Lansing. I like that they have many, many brands. Unlike Wegmans (where they put their name on everything.) I like options, Tops provides that!

Well stocked, clean and curtious staff. Not as much choice as some places for special items but good spot to get the essentials at fair prices

Always friendly helpful staff, supper clean inside and fair prices. Food is fresh.

Because they always have deals on food and they always have a manager Shelf which I like a lot I can always fun like discounted cereal and bread and cookies

I like Tops because they have good deals. Plus it is not overwhelming to me like Wegmans is.

Accessible location, open 24 hours every day except Christmas, friendly staff, very good food (and supplies and medicine) selection.
