Hiked from Leoto trailhead to Elk Creek Lake. Several spots where lots of trees down on path. Made it even more challenging. Be prepared to climb over downed trees on steep incline at one place. Steep inclines with no switchbacks. Found trash left behind by someone along the trail :-(. But otherwise, very challenging trail with some great views of surrounding landscape. Great trail for training.

Great tail going south with no logging for forty years. Only you can keep it that way! You can hike 8 miles and never cross a road.

The trailhead is located on the edge of a natural uplift of bedrock just west and a little south of the Scottsburg lowlands. There are many outcroppings of ancient sandstone and limestone in the area. Large boulders and fractured slabs weighing many tons can easily be located among cliffs and valleys.

The trail is extremely rugged with many inclines approaching 45 degrees up or down. State authorities however make sure it is 'fairly well' maintained by cutting overgrowth and fallen trees. They also do us the favor of marking the trail itself clearly, which leads north /north west from the trailhead across the Knobstone Escarpment as well as south southeast. The marking is KT for Knobstone Trail.

There are very few regulations governing use of the trail and surrounding lands.
Camping is free of charge but any campsite must be at least 1 mile from the trail in any given direction. No motorized or mechanical vehicles allowed on the trail, including bicycles. That's basically it. The rules are clearly posted on a sign at the trailhead entrance if one wants them verbatim.

One of the best places in Southern Indiana for nature lovers. It's Natural Beauty demands 5 stars.

A little more than halfway, North-bound, on a thru hike of the Knobstone Trail: great resupply point and easy to find.
