Fitch Natural History Reservation

We were there during a fairly unique time. There was a Hackberry Emperor swarm. It was an incredible experience to walk among all the swirling about butterflies. The path to walk on is quite nice and very shaded so good for a hot day which is was fairly warm. It's not overly long but there are other hiking paths available. There was a restroom available but I didn't use to see what type. The water fountain was operational and the butterflies were enjoying the water in the bowl after I used it. There is an area with a covering and picnic tables and concrete floor. It would be a good place to take kids walking.

This is a wonderful place. Very remote and quiet the day we walked it in mid-November. I would recommend taking the outer loop all the way around. Trail is a little rough, but we could find our way. Might be tough in summer.

visited with a birding group led by Jayhawk Audubon Society, a wide variety of species may be seen - there were some very muddy trails in places, so wear your hiking boots! highly recommended, especially for birding

Two photos posted here are not entirely correct. This is not the Roth trail head or the McColl Nature Preserve. The only parking for Fitch is in the parking lot for the Roth trail head then you cross the road you came in on to a brick and iron gate. There's an entrance next to the gate then you follow a gravel road to the beginning of the trail. There is a private home here so be respectful of their privacy and of their property. During my visit it was very peaceful and beautiful and noone else was there though there were many at the McColl Reserve and Roth trail head.

Great trials with lot of variation and difficulties. Saw lot of butterflies!

Watch out for the Ticks, they are everwhere
