Freedom of Information

I have had the occasion to ask for help from the FOIA offices on a number of issues over the years. They are extremely helpful. Additionally the FOIA office has provided classes in my town (and at other events that I have attended) and these also are very helpful. Special kudos to Tom Hennick

In my limited interactions with the FOI Commission, the main goal (to me) seems to be to accommodate agencies that deny FOI requests as much as possible.

As an example, the hearing officer (Danielle McGee) took a report from a local police report which stated "no crime involved" and made it a "criminal matter" so a document did not need to be provided under a FOIA request. This is the game that local police department do to evade FOIA requests, and the local police are allowed to do such things because those at the FOI Commission are more than willing to go along.

I would like to know how Ms McGee is working for the public or ensuring compliance with state FOIA laws is occurring.

As others have said, the FOIC is a political organization with no oversight itself that serves to protect agencies and municipalities from public oversight.
