This is a really interesting thing to see. The use of the trail has resulted in eroding a channel, which in some places is 20 feet deep. Here you can park your car and see this first hand in only a few hundred yards. As you walk the trail, you can't help but think of the people who have walked the trail before you. American soldiers heading east to participate in the 1812 war, early settlers, and slaves being forced to march to the cotton plantations.

Good history lesson in a real world example of the old Natchez Trace.

I like it. It was very secluded. Not very many people around easy trail for me and my dog

Worth a visit, so you can get an idea of what the original Natchez Trace trail-goers experienced. Amazing that these "ravines" were eroded by human and pack-animal foot traffic.

I hiked the entire Potkopinu section this past weekend. It is a fantastic section of the original Natchez Trace, sunken from centuries of use and erosion. It's like hiking a canyon, the walls reaching upward of 30-feet on each side of you. There are two stream crossings, neither of which too challenging if you have waterproof boots. Parking on either end. The entrance is not well marked and it wasn't on Google maps, so I both added this location and the photos of both the east and west entrance. It was a challenge to find. Hopefully I made that easier. The Daughters of the American Revolution placed a boulder stone memorializing nearby skirmishes near the western entrance, so look for that marker. There are no restrooms, so plan accordingly.

Look up for huge spiders and down for snakes. Bushwhack your way on down the trail. Very overgrown in October. Still picking off dozens of micro ticks. I love the idea if exploring the trail but it is entirely unmaintained.
