The Spencer is one of the most beautiful places I have ever stayed. Very organized with each room having its own separate design. Loved the Jacuzzi tub to just wind down and relax. Breakfast was definitely one of my favorite times of day with their delicious homemade cooking. The dining room is set up so beautifully and they are very welcoming to their guests. LeAnn was a huge help from preparing the room to making sure I was settled, comfortable, and all my needs were met. Helen was such a sweet heart and I loved learning the history of the hotel from her. Richard always makes you laugh and is so down to earth. Hannah is the best hotel mascot! Such a wonderful place right directly in the middle of everything. Highly recommend and cannot wait for my next stay!

My husband I truly enjoyed our stay and experience at the Spencer Hotel. Beautifully set in the Chautauqua Institution with a lake and amphitheater view, each room is themed after a famous writer. The inn is filled with historic charm and four floors of porch space to enjoy. The owners are wonderful and we truly enjoyed chatting with them. It would be a lovely setting for an intimate wedding and stay. With year round booking options, everyone should visit and enjoy at least once!

This is one of the best days I've had in a long time at the Spencer Hotel and Spa. Helen and LeAnn we're so accommodating and helpful my every need was taken care of immediately. Breakfast was eggs benedict made by Helen and served by LeAnn. I had an amazing day and will be back for sure!

The Spencer was the perfect anniversary getaway for my husband and I! The room and building were so charming with beautiful historic and "bookish" touches. In our room, we loved the jacuzzi tub and Spencer robes and in the entryway, we loved the piano open to all to play, and the quaint decor. The staff were so amazing and went above and beyond, home-cooking us breakfast each morning with adorable table decor! Helen's eggs benedict was the best we've ever had! They offered many ideas for things to do on our stay and the owner's husband sat with us during breakfast to help map out our day! The hotel was right behind the amphitheater, less than a two minute walk to the main lawn/spa/bookstore, and to the lake! Love Love Love!

Enjoyed my stay! It was private and quiet this time of year and is a fascinating place to see. Management was friendly and very inviting. Being able to explore the institute is also a bonus of staying here, seeing the diffent houses and old building was so fun! Definitely will stay again!

Me and my wife we out for our anniversary just after Thanksgiving. We stayed at the Spencer hoping to get away from the crowds of the weekend. It was one of the most enjoyable weekends we have had. LeAnn was our host for the weekend as we were told the owners were out of town on this given weekend. She was amazing an helped us at every turn from dinner suggestions to a guided wine tour. We would absolutely love to stay here again as the rooms were clean, the service, breakfast and the atmosphere were just AMAZING!! THANK YOU for the wonderful weekend can't wait to be back.....

My husband and I went to the Spencer Hotel for a quick getaway. The weather was awful on the drive in, but when we got there, the chaos drive was worth it. Helen, the owner, was there to make sure we had everything we needed and wanted to make sure we were comfortable. She took us to our room to give us the details and information we needed. We loved the idea that we could choose an amazing author themed room. We slept so comfortably. The next morning while Helen was making us breakfast, we had the pleasure of meeting her husband and lovable doggie. I sat down on the floor with the cute fur baby while her husband told us some history of the Chautauqua Institute. It was so comfortable there, as if we had known them forever. Helen brought out our breakfast and it was delicious, and more than we could eat. We spent the day venturing out while it was sunny, but cold. Our last night at the hotel was warm and cozy. When we woke up early the next morning, there was a foot of snow outside. Helen's husband had already shoveled outside for us and even offered to shovel the car and make us breakfast before we headed home before the weather got worse. We left extremely happy with our stay and are looking forward to going back in the spring for another stay. Oh... We also left with the room keys and had to call to let them know we had them. They were so sweet and understanding. If you love unique historic places that feel like home, this is the place.

This was such a unique little inn with wonderful staff and owner. Helen the owner made a lovely breakfast for everyone the in the morning - caprese egg casserole, fruit and cinnamon roll croissants 👌🥐 and the coffee was great too. We will definitely be back! We stayed in the Pablo Neruda room on the forth floor which had a nice balcony and great views during the fall season. This place is a treasure. If you enjoy time capsule homes and destinations you will have the best stay here. I

Great location close to the lake. The historic building well over 100 years old has lots of character and charm. The staff was very nice and helpful, with Helen's breakfast to start our day off right. Will stay again!!!!

We were so pleased to stay at the Hotel with friends over a July weekend. The location was perfect. We could hear music from the amphitheater’s front porch. Pleasant breakfast and rooms perfectly met our needs. Owners were ever available with fabulous staff to jump in to accommodate. Hope to return this year.

Like a Bed & Breakfast, Beautiful, Amazing, Cute, quaint, historical, and cozy. An old hotel refurbished so that every room has a writers theme. Ingenious. If you’re lucky the owners ( also the caretakers) will personally serve you breakfast. Smaller, cozy rooms. Be sure that if you want one you get a room with a full shower. I had a choice between a room with a bath tub and a balcony or a room with a shower and no balcony. I still would’ve had access to my floor’s balcony, but I chose the room with the tub. I couldn’t wait to take an old-fashioned bath. The hotel south is in the Chautauqua institute community which has itself a ton of history. Mayville and exceedingly historic Jamestowne are right there.

We spent a few days at the Spencer off season and the stay could not have been more charming. Lovely, fun, eclectic design throughout and the warm and charming hosts separate the Spencer from the ordinary. The breakfast was great and the location couldn't be beat.

old-world charm! The Spencer is a quaint, charming Inn where time slows down a bit. The owners were very nice and accomodating. The location is perfect, almost across the street from the amphitheatre. When the season starts, you can hear the concerts and speakers right from the balcony

This is a quaint old hotel with porches overlooking the amphitheater at Chautauqua. The host and hostess Dick and Helen, are delightful people.
The dinners are in a common area with opportunity to meet new friends, and discuss the day and evening events. This is an older building, not a Marriott; you have to be tolerant on this issue. Would go there again.

Posting here as well as Trip Advisor because it was that good! My fiancĂ©e and I definitely chose the right time pace to spend New Year’s Eve. Helen and Dick are amazing, putting great effort into the accommodations; even their little dog, Hannah loves to greet people! We will be going back, and hope to host our wedding there!

Wonderful getaway to Western NY, a true hidden gem. My girlfriend and I made a weekend of it. Stopping at quaint candy shops and unique wineries on our way from Buffalo. The couple that runs the place was extremely accommodating from the moment we arrived in Chautauqua.

VIsited Southern Tier Brewery, a must for any craft beer lovers. Dick took us on a wine tour after our massage in their spa. 100% would recommend to friends and family.

We stayed two weeks in the Charles Dickens room, plenty of room and comfortable bed. Two delicious meals a day and the hospitality was beyond great. We will be back!
