Grand Avenue St Louis,MO Water Tower

This is the oldest existing watertower in Saint Louis. Built in 1870, it looks like a giant Greek column with a Corinthian capital. This 47 meter tall standpipe watertower is the tallest free-standing corinthian column in the world. Nice to see such historical structures.

Very interesting architecture, one of 3 left in the city. Just a word of caution before you go, this IS a very dangerous area -- and not just because locals don't know how to use a roundabout. I got interested in local architecture because I always waited here to buy H back in 2010 -- it was not 5/5 stuff. Don't flash expensive phones or drive a pricey car when you go. Due to carjackings, if you see an out-of-place stop sign or a group of people standing near one, consider a rolling stop (use your best judgement.) Especially don't look lost or indecisive. Check out the Bissel Water Tower just a few blocks away. I'd suggest the water tower on SOUTH Grand, called the Compton Hill Water Tower. It has stairs and windows. My dad took me up to the top in 1999 during renovations. We were one of the last people to be in it. MUCH safer.

I remember my grandfather (Joe Dupree) cutting the grass around the water tower. When your on the highway traveling back to your hometown and you see the water tower, you know that you have arrived home.
