Shoal Creek Baptist Church Cemetery

Shoal Creek Cemetery is a beautifully kept resting place upon a hill just above the church of the same name. A majority of those buried there are descendants of the earliest settlers in the Balsam Grove and Gloucester area of the upper part of Transylvania County. “McCall” is the predominant name to be found here. Shoal Creek Cemetery is one of those rare cemeteries where many of the graves are “mounded” with limestone gravel. Even many of the graves marked only with fieldstones are also cared for in such a way. There is a yearly decoration day where family members and others participate in cleaning the cemetery and tightening up the mounds. Visitors will find a locked donation box on a post in the middle of the cemetery. All funds go to the upkeep of the cemetery. Shoal Creek Baptist Church is to be commended for the care they place on the memory of their ancestors and other relatives.
