We stayed in the Athena Suite for four nights and loved it. It's a comfortable place to hang in the evenings, with a beautiful garden complete with multiple outdoor seating options. The first floor has a living room, dining area, kitchenette, and half bath. Upstairs has an open main bedroom with a king bed, a small room with a queen bed, and a full bath. The beds were very comfortable, and they gave us plenty of nice towels. The mini fridge was stocked with water. There was an ice maker and a pod coffee maker. There's a window air conditioner on the first floor and a free-standing unit in the main bedroom. It would have been nice if the skylights in the upstairs small bedroom and bathroom opened since there were no windows. Those rooms were very warm, even with the fan they provided. Still, we'd stay there again because we really loved it.

We decided to make a last-minute trip to Portsmouth and the Martin Hill Inn was a great base for exploring Portsmouth and other smaller towns nearby. It's close enough to downtown that you can easily walk there but far enough that it's quiet and gives you the feeling of being in a neighborhood. The room we had was really nice and their gardens are pleasant. They offer parking but there's also plenty of space on the street. It was a great value as well.

We had an excellent stay at the Martin Inn. We stayed at the Sea Witch in the guest house. Room was charming with some important amenities (comfy, thick towels, soap and shampoo/conditioner, fridge with water, creamer and tea/coffee). The bed was very comfortable. The house was quiet at night, but I believe we were the only ones staying mid-week. Garden area was gorgeous and the parking & electronic access was very convenient. The inn is about a 15 min walk to downtown Portsmouth. Highly recommend!

We loved our stay at the Martin Hill Inn! We stayed in the Dashing Wave room. So cute and great bathroom. Gorgeous garden out back and great location just a short walk to downtown. Easy checkin and checkout. Will definitely be staying again on our next visit!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Our rooms were very nice. The garden is amazing and we enjoyed relaxing in one of the many sitting areas in the garden. The fire table is a plus in the evening!!

The staff was super accommodating. The room was simple but lovely, clean, and elegant. The bed was very comfortable. I loved that they didn't use plastic water bottles or anything of that sort. There was nice natural light as well. The property is beautiful and peaceful with the garden and the bird songs and in a perfect location - walking distance to downtown but far enough away from the noise. I would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a true Portsmouth experience.

Very nice room & bathroom, well appointed, super comfy bed, all with a personalized, modern New England decor. Easy and pleasant walk to downtown through the residential neighborhood.

We had a wonderful stay The Martin Hill Inn last weekend! Our King Room was spacious, comfortable, and clean. The location is perfect for walking into town for shopping and dining. I highly recommend staying at The Martin Hill Inn during your next visit to Portsmouth or the NH Seacoast!

We had a wonderful stay at the Martin Hill Inn. The Typhoon Room was charming, quiet, and
comfortable. The private seating areas in the beautiful garden were such an added bonus. The Martin Hill Inn is within waking distance to all the action in downtown Portsmouth but is in a very quiet residential area. We are already planning a return visit.

This is such a special Inn. So nicely decorated. Clean and modern. I would live in the Athena Room as an apartment. Two bedrooms. The comfiest bed and high thread count sheets. I can’t wait to go back. Portsmouth is so cute and this is the perfect place to stay. Wish we could have stayed longer!

We stayed in the Typhoon room. A very comfortable room with beautiful wallpaper, lamps, couple of armchairs, very comfortable bed and pillows. The "touchless" system for getting in and out of the room with the codes was very convenient. There are plenty of nice places for breakfast just a few blocks away, heading towards downtown. Between the parking lot and the house where the rooms are. there is a lovely garden with wrought iron tables and chairs where you can sit and relax. A friendly rabbit came to say hi when I was sitting at the table outside in the garden. We will stay there again when we want to visit Portsmouth. This was our anniversary so it had to be good and it was.

Did a quick 14 hours at the inn. Bed was super comfortable. Room was super clean. Courtyard was lovely. Instructions simple to follow. It couldn't have been better. Was absolutely turnKey and will definitely go back.

A charming hotel.

My room was located in the “main building”, a tiny, cosy, adorably simple New England house. My room was clean and my bed was very comfortable.

I highly recommend it especially if you prefer charm over amenities.

The property was as described on the website, very easy access to the room and the location is within easy walking distance to the downtown area. The room reflects the traditional colonial style, but the bathroom is updated to current standards. The garden path from the parking area was a nice bonus.

Martin Hill Inn was a very nice place to stay for a few days. Our room was cozy, clean and just right! There was a Kuerig in the downstairs foyer and a small ice maker (!) so you could have hot or cold. Heartily recommend.

We have stayed at Martin Hill Inn three times now and highly recommend them for any stay in the Portsmouth NH area. Innkeepers, Russ and Meg, offer a unique breed of hospitality that flows from their individual interests and personalities. The inn is decorated with all kinds of antique nautical equipment and artifacts, and gorgeous old original paintings of ships (painted by one of Russ’ ancestors) grace the walls. It is clear that what Meg and Russ offer is from the heart. Check in and check out are easy, and you will enjoy plenty of privacy at this inn. Meg and Russ are available if you need them, but are in no way overbearing or grabby hosts. I think their generosity and kindness as hosts is quietly evident in the thought they have put into every little detail to make your stay comfortable and peaceful. Every room we have ever stayed in has been impeccably clean, tastefully decorated and exceedingly comfy. They have thought of everything. The common space has tea, coffee, an ice maker, and sherry and cookies available for guests. Each room has high speed wifi, a mini fridge, television and full bathroom with all the amenities. We stayed in the Cathedral room this time and it was absolutely wonderful. We enjoyed a night of deep sleep and a wonderful breakfast in the morning of a yogurt parfait, bacon and the fluffiest blueberry yeast waffles ever. This is the place to stay if you are looking for lodging in Portsmouth, whether your travels are for work, rest, or play.

I loved the shade gardens in the back yard. We stayed in a house adjacent to the main house. It was clean and attractive but I would have preferred being in the main house. Good parking. Good breakfasts, friendly hosts. Portsmouth has so much to offer. We'll go again.

We stayed at the Martin Hill Inn for five days during a recent trip to New England. The Inn was clean and well maintained. Margo was lovely and went out of her way to make sure that we had ideas for places to go during our stay. The Martin Hill Inn staff are also very good with making sure their breakfast options fit your food preferences.

The Inn is located just a few blocks from downtown. You can easily walk to restaurants and other points of interest in the city center. We highly recommend visiting the Strawberry Banke Museum which covers 400 years of local history. Although we visited during winter in New England, we were still able to enjoy the walk downtown.

The only negative would be that from the main house you can hear some traffic noise from Islington Street. The traffic noise is not terribly loud. However, if you are accustom to sleeping in complete silence, you might want to avoid staying in the rooms located in the main house.

We would stay at the Martin Hill Inn again and recommend it to our friends and family.

The inn was delightful and the innkeepers wonderful. The inn is in a quaint historic home in walking distance to downtown. The accommodations were great. The breakfast (2 courses!) inlcuded the best waffles I've ever had! I would stay here again and recommend to any friend.
