I stayed at the 1870 house for a week, and it's as charming and spacious as the pictures suggest! If you love old homes with character and style, you'll love this place. The details were stunning. I had to work all week and really appreciated the many, many options for a suitable office. Lots of quiet, private spots to set up camp, most with backgrounds that were A++ on my Zoom calls. :) The bedding was cozy, lots of great free streaming options on the giant TV, and the backyard view was a real respite in the middle of my workday. The hosts were AMAZING. The most respectful, conscientious, responsive, and communicative of any I've ever encountered on Airbnb or otherwise. They were down to give us our own space but also extremely gracious, sharing recommendations for the area, leaving us welcome treats and even asking about any dietary restrictions. Just couldn't ask for kinder, more professional, lovely people. The house location was convenient to lots of great outdoorsy spots, easy shopping, and recreation--Chicago was a quick 2-hour-drive away! All in all, 10/10, can't recommend this place enough. Have fun!

The 1870 house is beautiful! We stayed for a little over a week in May. We were greeted with cake and flowers our first night, and our hosts were super responsive, kind, and friendly the entire time. A couple unforeseen issues came up during our stay, and they worked around our schedules to resolve them. They were attentive and happy to give us space and privacy when we wanted. There's plenty of space with fast internet, so we never had to worry about connectivity even with multiple people on video during the day. The hosts are the very definition of midwestern friendly!

We spent a whole week at 1870 House. The home is charming, and beautiful. All of the beds were brand new and super comfy which was great to rest after our busy days adventuring. We enjoyed the game area which was fun to have drinks and play shuffle board on the day it rained. We went in fall, the colors were spectacular and the weather was perfect. We went apple picking nearby and also had a chance to check out some of the vineyards and wineries. The hosts of 1870 House did not disappoint! All the special touches made our trip memorable, and we can't wait to book our next outing and stay again.

I stayed at 1870 House for an extended weekend. My stay was nothing short of perfect. I work remotely, so having the space to work (with solid Wifi), get things done, but also still be able to cook and relax with my friends was a huge reason I selected this house. Each morning, we were able to wake up, walk less than 3 min to get a coffee at the local coffee shop, or a snack at one of the restaurants for lunch. The hosts were quite possibly the nicest I have had in my travels around the country. They live close, so they met me upon arrival, and were able to answer (quickly) any questions I had during my stay. Given that I live less than 2 hours away, there is no question I will be back. Five Stars all around. Thanks, Zena and Richard!

What a pleasure it was stay at the 1870 House in Dowagiac. Fantastic for our larger groups. We had a mom and daughter gathering totalling 6 of us. Never did I feel crammed or like we were on each other. So
much free flowing room to move and groove.

The Children are 2 years old, so lots of energy. Also lots of molars growing, which means hands in mouth, floor time, and exploring. All of which we were at ease with being it was so clean.

My daughter was especially thrilled with the plush carpet grand stairs, as was I, for safety. The banister was sturdy and the stairs easy for her to navigate with supervision. It was gorgeous. In fact the whole house had fun details and charms to seek while chasing kids. So many details authentic to the Era. My favorite area was the sunroom with the swing. Many cups of morning coffee (made from a provided top of the line coffee machine) were had there.

Even better yet, at the end of our busy days we had clean comfy beds to rest our weary heads. I always woke up feeling well rested, maybe even more so than at home.

Overall, I can't think of much, if anything I'd ever want or need different other than the weather that kept us in more than we'd have liked. But that just made me even more grateful that we stayed in such a fantastic home!

I recently booked a weekend stay with friends at 1870, although admittedly I had no idea what to expect. I knew Dowagiac was a small town a couple hours west of Detroit, and the pictures of the house itself were promising. Seems I couldn’t have picked a better rental because in one word, WOW!

I had a WONDERFUL time! The town, the house and the people completely blew me away. Plus, our hosts thought of every detail. From fresh coffee in the mornings to cozy linens, board games, personalized welcome treats to a home fully restored to perfection, it was the perfect place to retreat for a quick getaway from the city.

My tips: be sure to head over to the farmers market for locally grown goodies on Saturdays. Or even take a day trip to the western beach towns (Saugatuck, Benton Harbor, South Haven), which are only 45 minutes away. There’s an adorable coffee shop in the heart of Dowagiac too with yummy baked goods and the largest iced coffee I’ve ever put in my hands!

I’m definitely eager to stay again soon, and will be singing the praises of 1870 to anyone who will listen. Seriously, one of the best Airbnb experiences I’ve ever had.

We stayed at 1870 House for Father's Day last year and it was such a wonderful experience. We were able to have a family weekend with all our children and everybody had their own room!

We spent time in the gorgeous garden in the backyard, grilled on the deck and ate dinner downtown in one of the new restaurants that had just opened up a few weeks earlier.

1870 House had generously donated a weekend for a Silent Auction item supporting the Dowagiac Marching Band. I appreciated the opportunity to support the band and experience their wonderful accommodations. I look forward to visiting them again
