Cranky Hanks Pizza Bank

Fantastic pizza and great service. This cozy pizza place, while a bit of a drive from Cedar Rapids, is well worth the drive.

As for the pizza I highly recommend starting with an order of cheesy Hank Bread. Featuring some tasty cheese atop some of the most flavorful soft and chewy dough I've experienced. We opted for the xlarge for my family of 4; it was quickly devoured!

Our pie of the night was a half pepperoni and half Stromboli, a spicy Italian sausage similar to, albeit spicier, than Leonardo's Stromboli. The crust was perfectly cooked and featured the same flavorful, soft and chewy dough. Just the right ratio of sauce, cheese, and topping!

They also have a small offering of Iowa made craft beers.

Great service to boot. Our last two visits, the owners were both there and checked on us from time to time in a very friendly and personable manner. Wait staff made sure your beverage never reached empty.

Definitely give this place a shot!

This pizza is absolutely worth the drive!

We were visiting my brother in Cedar Rapids and he was like "Let's get pizza" and I wasn't really feeling it tbh. Then he was driving forever out into the hinterlands (like 15 minutes or so, but it was through fields) and I thought he was definitely taking me somewhere to kill me. We ended up in this cute little (tiny) town of Shellsburg at Cranky Hanks Pizza. My brother ordered a large sausage (no discussion) and I have not had pizza this good since Frank Pepe's in New Haven (totally different style tho). This is the BEST Quad-City style pizza, hands down, I've ever eaten, and definitely some of the best pizza I've ever had (including gorgonzola pizza in Florence!). To top it off, the owner heard my daughter and I were newbies, so he brought us a slice of their famous (for a reason!) cheesecake.

Sigh... when you need destination dining, or just a great reason to order out again, this is it!

First time visit, based on recommendations. Ordering on phone was very fast, the person answered all our questions, very polite easily understood, when asked when it would be ready, it was exactly done when said.
The building was easily identified, well lit and clean. The owner greeted me, we had a nice discussion, and he was appreciative. The pizza was very good, and we will be returning and highly recommend this business.

We tried Cranky Hank's for the first time tonight and LOVED our experience! We loved finding quad-city style pizza nearby and it was so flavorful. Bonus that they have a ton of variety and options to choose from! The staff were so nice and we enjoyed our conversations with the owners. The environment was welcoming and everything you'd expect in a small-town restaurant. We do pizza every Friday night and can't wait to add this to our regular rotation. I highly recommend and definitely will be back (with our friends and families!).

We visited cranky hanks for the first time Friday night, the place was busy but we were still able to get right in and find a table. Waitress greeted my wife and I very fast and was friendly. We ordered the meat lovers and it was fantastic! Fresh tasting sauce and the crust was cooked to a perfect crispy outside but soft inside. The breadstick style they cut the pizza is very nice and easy to eat with either your hands or fork! The homemade cream cheese pie was as good if not a tad better than the pizza!! One of the biggest surprises for my wife and I was how reasonable the bill was considering the drinks, appetizer, pizza, and desert! Can’t wait to go back!!!

This is such a hidden gem that I can't believe it was my first time dining there tonight!

The moment we walked in we were greeted by Keith who is so jovial that his presence makes you feel right at home.

Our server was extremely knowledgeable and attentive. We wanted for nothing the entire time we were there. She had great recommendations from the menu. The way the serving staff and the owner interact shows me that he has a lot of respect for his employees and they do for him as well. You don't always find that in restaurants.

Now for the food.... the cheese bread alone told me what kind of experience I was going to have with my pizza. it is a perfectly hand-tossed dough that is neither too thin that it crumbles or too thick that it is still doughy. The cheese is so melty and gently pulls apart showing me that they use a quality product. The marinara alone was impressive as it didn't taste like just tomato sauce and had the perfect level of seasoning and spice without being too overpowering.

These are all great bases for a perfect Pizza as you know. The owner was nice enough to suggest that we could do our pizza a little differently than normal since they were a little slower. We did half Love of Greece and a quarter taco and a quarter sausage mushroom. This pizza was cooked to perfection despite having three different types on it! The meat to topping ratio was spot on!

I literally felt like I was having an orgasm of flavor in my mouth!!!!!

They also offer a locally made cheesecake which is the perfect amount of decadence without being too much after such an amazing meal!

The only downside I could find and it isn't much of one is that they are only open two nights a week. I would much rather go back several nights a week because once you've had their pizza you'll want it everyday!!

I am happy to report that they gained a new regular and I will be happy to send anyone there for pizza.

Their pizza is awesome and the service we get is always great. One of the best pizza places in all of eastern Iowa and we are lucky enough to have it right here in our home town. Come try it, you won't be sorry.

Amazing! We had the xl pizza with meat lovers on one side and the Greek one on the other, it was so good! Ingredients tasted very fresh. Also couldn’t leave without trying the famous cheesecake. That didn’t disappoint either. Really great texture and so good!

I am a pizza lover, and this is my favorite pizza place. Excellent homemade crust that is the perfect texture between chewy and crisp. Perfect amount of cheese, sauce, and toppings. Their Stromboli spicy sausage has great spice and flavor, and seriously, everything is outstanding. They also have the best crab rangoon pizza I've ever had, and they have so many different other pizza options to choose from that I'm sure are also just as delicious. The homemade cheesecake is absolutely amazing, too. Great, friendly service to add to it all. Overall, just a wonderful place to eat! YUM!!!

We had such a great experience holding our daughter’s small intimate wedding reception at Hank’s. Staff was so accommodating, opened at special time for us. Made so many special requested pies & open bar. The guests were absolutely delighted. Thank you Cranky Hanks owners & Julie for making it all workout wonderfully.

Being a pizza connoisseur, one thing I look for is how well a pizza place can make a cheese pizza. IF you can nail a cheese pizza everything else is that much better, and Cranky Hanks does just that.

Their entire menu makes you want to ask for "one of each" because it is that freaking good.

The only complaint I have is I can't give it 6 stars.....

If you're in the area, give this place a visit. It will be worth it.

SO good !! My whole family loved the pizza (Called the Bellyacher) and Hank bread!! The crust is amazing!! Has to be my favorite in Cedar Rapids area! My husband and 3 year old had a great experience and they gave my son a sticker :) thank you! We will be back!

If your looking for pizza that will WOW you, then this is the place to go. It's just a short drive from the corridor area. The food is incredible and a nice selection of beverages. Take the trip and enjoy!

We took my son for the first time Friday. We have a hard time getting him to eat normally, ordered a half mac & cheese half cheese and he ate almost his entire half of cheese pizza!
He has now named Cranky Hanks Pizza Bank his favorite pizza place and can't wait to go back!

If you like pizza varieties, this is the place to go. It's worth the drive if you live a ways away. I think we've tried 3 or 4 different pizzas you can't get from any place around. Every one of them were very delicious so much I waddled out! Top shelf pizza, service and location. Check them out.

If you're looking for a small town pizza place shellsburg Iowa is the place to go. We got the spicy Hawaiian pizza it was excellent: homemade stromboli pepperoni pineapple and fresh mozzarella absolutely delicious. If you like alcoholic beverages with your pizza the hank juice is the way to go.

Me and a friend had the taco pizza it was the best I had in a while. I’ve been there a couple times before.The service was amazing. You can’t go wrong with any of there pizzas.
