Ottumwa Family Animal Care

Grateful for the expert and compassionate care! We moved to Iowa a few months ago and had not yet been to the vet with our pets. One of our 10-year-old rabbits suddenly stopped eating. I called many places, and no one could see us on the same day. At Family Animal Care, DeLisa answered the phone and told us, "Just come." When we arrived, we were seen right away and were incredibly fortunate to be helped by Dr. Drew White. Dr. Drew was compassionate, examined our rabbit thoroughly, and explained everything completely. While only one of our rabbits was not eating, he looked over both of them and prescribed medicine for the sick one. The cost of the visit was affordable, and when we got home, our rabbit ran straight to the hay box and starting chowing down. We received a Welcome Friends card in the mail, signed by all of the staff. It's on our window sill. Thanks, Family Animal Care! We'll be back.

My spouse and I have been to Family Animal Care in Ottumwa three times so far (9/21/2023, 10/18/2023, and 11/8/2023).

Our first visit was a last-minute emergency appointment for our cat Sophie who was having stomach problems. Kaitlyn, a Veterinary Assistant, was very kind and helpful. Dr. Drew White, a Veterinarian, was extremely professional, thorough, kind, and compassionate. He expertly diagnosed Sophie’s problem and gave us some medicine that helped her feel better.

Our second and third visits were vaccine appointments for all three of our cats. One of our cats hates riding in the car, and she made a mess in her carrier on the way to the vet. We didn’t ask or expect anyone to do this, but Chloe, a Veterinary Assistant, offered to clean the carrier for us. My spouse and I were amazed by her proactive helpfulness and kindness. We appreciate you, Chloe! 😊

Dr. Drew White and Chloe were exceptionally friendly, helpful, and attentive during both of our vaccine appointments. Dr. Drew White answered all of my questions clearly and thoroughly, which I appreciated very much. He has a great “bedside manner”.

The high quality care our cats have received (as well as the high quality service we have received) influenced my spouse and I to switch from our old vet to Family Animal Care. Even though it’s a longer drive, it’s totally worth it for us. In my experience, Family Animal Care’s prices are fair and reasonable. We’re so grateful for their awesome staff and facility. This is my favorite Vet Clinic in a 45 minute radius of Fairfield. Our sweet teddy bear of a boy was diagnosed with bone cancer in January '22 at a different clinic. We were repeatedly told amputation wasn't an option because of his size and it not being a cure. After a sudden change in pain levels we were forced to look at euthanasia before he was ready or we were. Dr. Lopp was more than happy to do a consult with us to see if he was a good amputation candidate, and much to our relief he was 💜 The first surgery went great, but after 2 days home he ripped a stitch and they didn't even bat an eye about squeezing him in to be seen that day. At his 2 week post op to remove stitches he seemed to have a little infection starting so they sent us home with more antibiotics. But the next day the stitch he'd initially ripped had reopened even more. They again urged us to rush him in to be seen. Somehow, at some point, his remaining leg bone had gone through his muscle. They immediately started prepping him for surgery but discovered he had a VERY high fever. They didn't charge us for the surgery prep & sent us home with a stronger antibiotic over the weekend to kick whatever was going on so he could have the surgery to repair the damage. (This was a friday). I missed their first call Saturday but they called back again that day to make sure he was doing okay and the antibiotics were working. Monday he went back in for surgery and they found an infection up by his remaining leg bone.
We truly can't thank everyone there enough. From the receptionists always being so nice with my frequent calls and visits, to the sweet girl who walked the dogs and made a point to love on Capone a little extra, to all his techs and Dr. Lopp himself. Everyone always smothers him in love and attention, and even laughed off his dramatic, "poor me", moments.
We will be forever grateful that our boy was given more, pain-free time to be with us. We'll never take our animals anywhere else.

Very caring people. Our dog doesn’t like strangers or other people in general. We was afraid he was going to bite them even with us having a muzzle on him he can take it off. They took it serious and made us and even him comfortable. He did amazing and didn’t try to bite anyone and stood still during his visit. They take care of both our dogs very well.

Chloe, Katelyn, Dr Drew were fantastic. Answered all questions bout zeus's diabetes n treatment. Kept me informed. Ft dsk staff always receptive to my many worried calls n always competent and friendly. Wout fac zeus would not be here w me tonight. Now he's got a 2nd chance at life.

Awesome 👍! I had just started calling vets looking for someone who works with "exotics" such as 🦎 reptiles, and I got lucky, finding this place in Ottumwa with an exotic vet 5 MINUTES AWAY! In my case I needed help with my Crested Gecko, Spike, as he had a heck of a fecal impaction (yup, I tried saunas, a drop if olive oil and electrolytes to no avail). Remember, keep your habitats warm enough, or impaction can be the result. Paid only $75 fir an exotic visit, TOTAL. Amazing place, I picked up Spike and he has been regular since! Exotic vet works Tues, Weds, and Thursdays only. I cant wait to post this to all the herp sites that told me nearest vet to Ottumwa was in Des Moines (other than this vet, they could be right). Re: picture, I out Spike in s velvet lined hat, closed up to take him from warm house to freezing outside,to car. He was pleased, hard to get him OUT of the stocking cap.

Dr. Tom and Dr. Drew have both cared for my Gracie. They answered all my concerns and took the time to talk through possibilites and rule out what I had already tried. They treated Gracie with kindness and patient. I would recommend them both for your fur babies!

I had to put my beloved cat to sleep today, and Pipestone staff and doctors were all I could hope for. I’ve been with them for about 20 years , and I believe they offer superb care. They have a comfort room for when a pet has to pass with a discreet exit. This is compassionate planning. They are both pet and parent centered

Just moved to iowa from south Florida and my dog has a lot of issues and his ankle had some inflammation around it and being a nervous dog mom as I am I didn’t have a vet here these people were nothing sort of amazing. They got us right in explained everything and had us on our way. We have definitely found our primary vet

I have a tortoise who needed a beak trim and general checkup/checkover and Dr. Drew is great!! I was so happy to find a vet in town that works with exotics, Sir Godfrey is looking and eating so much better! The desk staff is super friendly and helpful! Highly recommend this vet!!

I took my bearded dragon here for a visit and was very impressed with the staff there. They were all very friendly and helpful. It's hard to find an exotic vet in this area so I'm very glad to have found this clinic. I would recommend this office 100%.
