Homestead House Museum

This house is about 2 miles or so from the Cumberland Homesteads Tower. A brief tour of the house is well worth your time if you are interested in a successful New Deal program from the 1930's. Wonderful craftsmanship on this stone and frame house. FDR implemented bold ideas to put people to work, and provide housing and dignity. Very good history lesson.

Talk about a step back into time. Such simple living that gives a good perspective of how people lived less than a hundred years ago. Definitely worth the stop ether going to Cumberland Mtn State Park or coming from the tower museum. Such a cute little house, gives the feeling or warmth and an experience you can only get by visiting such a place.

The lady who was volunteering to be the tour hostess, or whatever you call it, had grown up in a similar homestead house nearby. She had a lot of experiences that she shared that was so interesting to hear.

This is a neat picture of the past. The docent was a child of homesteaders and was a wealth of information about the buildings. The building itself is beautiful with great woodwork and stonework. We enjoyed our visit immensely.

This is a MUST SEE while in the Crossville area! It is quaint and charming. The artifacts are from the actual original homestead families that started and lived on the homestead.

The host is such a nice lady. Very familiar with the history and construction of the Homesteaders design. The design of the house is the handsomist I've ever seen. Very attractive. I'm trying to purchase land in the area. Will try to replicate it.

Hubby and I enjoyed a trip through this wonderful home on one of our many visits to Crossville, Tn. Very few of these original homesteads are as they were when first built. Some are in bad shape, have not been taken care of, some have been overly remodeled to the point of no longer looking like the original building. This beautiful homestead cost very little to view, the furniture is some of the original owners, and you get a little taste of what life was like in the 30's. A surprise to see is the cistern in the attic that catches rain water for the house toilet and sinks. A great visit if you are going through Crossville.

I have been visiting Crossville for 30 years and just visited the Homestead Museum for the first time; shame on me. I taught middle school students about the Homestead Act for many years, but the history books generalize too much. I gained a new perspective and highly recommend a visit to this museum.

I wish I knew the ladies' name that was on site the day we went. She showed us all around and even in the attic.

Very accurate depiction of how people lived in the era of the "New Deal." Must see! You should visit this along with the homestead tower museum to get the full effect.

A great look at how people lived just after the Great Depression. The docent was very friendly and knowledgeable.
