Wood and Swink Store and Post Office

We were on a 2-day, one night trip in search of Old Florida along Route 441, east of I-75. One of our stops was Evinston along with Micanopy, McIntosh, and the Rawlings home in Cross Creek.

Covid has resulted in limited opening hours:
M-F 1-5 and Saturday from 8-10. We were lucky to meet Mr. Mike, the “post office person” who regaled us with stories and area history. Mail was delivered while we visited and local patrons came in to pick up their mail from the oldest combination P.O. boxes I’ve ever seen along with some of the oldest general store merchandise I’ve ever seen including DVDs of “Doc Hollywood” with Michael J. Fox. Evinston was among the set locations. A former packing house is adjacent to the po.

In its day, Wood and Swink would have been the place to shop, talk and pick up mail. The Wood family has been the sole owner since 1910. It’s amazing that it is still open. We contributed by buying a sheet of stamps. Plan on spending 30 minutes or more if you are lucky enough to hear about its history.

The park next door is a time capsule. I was on my way to an appointment and saw the slide. I have so many memories of waxed paper polish and burned thighs.

Step back in time by visiting this Old Time General Store and still operational post office! This store has been in the same family for generations and spending time chatting with them is a real treat! The local area remains very rural and many beautiful vistas and historic homes are in the immediate vicinity.

A run down, shabby, lowlight older building inside - (really, this is a post office?)...with unwelcoming older man inside behind the counter, The place reminded me of the movie Deliverance. Horrible, vile, not some place you want to venture - historical or not - with this person supposedly running things. Hope the federal post office powers to be are searching not only for another more convenient location but a new postman as well. Yuk. (And by the way, we were on a tour to see historic buildings in Central North Florida. What a disappointing experience.)
