I am 16. I came to this hospital because of suicidal thoughts. The wait to get a room was long but it was worth it. When I finally got to the floor and got into my room,it was very clean. The nurses and staff were very nice and they helped me. They had me diagnosed after 2 or 3 days and I was put on medication. The staff is very encouraging, patient, and welcoming. I would recommend this place to anyone who needs help! If I start struggling again I would 100% go back. I am thankful for the hospital, nurses, and staff.

This facility saved my life. The staff I encountered was amazing. Every member of staff showed how dedicated they were to the wellbeing of their patients and also in creating a therapeutic environment. They made me feel safe and not alone in my suffering as most of the staff could relate to having struggles of their own. The days were filled with activities including group therapy sessions, engagement groups, art and music therapy, and even patient led activities. The staff was very involved in patient care spending time with the patients doing activities and playing games along side us which created a healing and fun environment. The food was more then edible and they always fed us more than enough. I hope to never have to return to a mental health facility but if I have to I would only go to this hospital. I gave them a 5 star rating and I would go higher if I could. Nobody wants to have to visit a psychiatric hospital but if you are struggling with mental health issues I would highly recommend western pa psych.

My experience with this place has been pleasant enough . They give us a bit of privacy and are accommodating..when we were new going there and didn't know which way to go ..more then one person was helpful ..I feel like they're giving their best in a very stressful environment!

I was here 3 years ago its bad in the sense I've been to 5 different mental institutions McKeesport, Forbes regional, butler, Kittanning and here.. The others were clean, more serious, more professional.. and the nurses cared more than here. Now if I didn't get better I'd give a 1 star but going here actually saved me. I had schitzoaffective disorder for 6.5 years and if I didn't go here I don't know if I would've never snapped or if it. I woke up one morning to pee and I went to go in the bathroom and some girl punched me on the side of the head cause she thought I was someone else or some crazy thing, and from that day on I became myself again my delusions gone after I questioned my reality... I was back in the real reality I haven't been institutionalized since. So I actually think this place is good for People that were like me [someone in early 20's who gets diagnosed with some oirm of schizophrenia cause maybe it just takes a stranger to punch them to wake up.. and that will more than likely happen here than any other institution I been to. And it had to be a complete strange, if it was someone I knew a friend or family who punch me I would of never questioned my delusions... it had to be a absolute compete stranger with just 1 hit on the side of the head that did it. Who ever that lady was I will always be grateful she did that to me that morning. Also there's only one nurse who actualy genuinely cared and her name was sue. She in the little class we had explained to us she has scitzofrenia herself and her experiences her past and how she deals and dealt with things really helped me. I was able to relate to her and also realize I was under that category. She also helped me wake up so I hope they still have her there and if they do she should be giving classes every single day cause if she had a hand which I know she did in saving me then she can reach more people and save... like honestly when I was crazy I never believed I had any schizophrenia at all.. so talking to her and listening to her experiences made me realize that maybe I actually have the diagnosis I was given.. I remember not wanting to believe it listening to her but it wasn't too she said one personal private trait she would experience that I connected with her more that made my experience feel more real and believe my diagnosis. It was a really private feeling she would get that i did to i don't want to type cause its kinda embarrassing so im not gonna say. So I thank her also with my life and I hope she gives classes every single day there and gets a raise cause she has a hand in saving me and getting me back to my family after being gone for 6.5 years while my parents are still here to see me. I'm so thankful for that

My daughter did an inpatient stay from February 1st until April 10th . She has low functioning autism, an intellectual disability, and has severe self injury , head hitting and aggressive behaviors towards others . In the past she has given herself a brain injury from head hitting , anyways I was very nervous to send addy to a hospital , scared she would definitely injure herself in that type of setting , western psych accommodated every single one of my daughters complex needs and went above and beyond in her care . I can’t say enough good things about the CADD (John Merck unit ) and their staff and how they treated my daughter for her entire stay . Doctor kettel was very thorough with her treatment , really listened to us , was the first psychiatrist I can Honestly say has listened to us . And the staff , my goodness , there isn’t one bad thing I can say and I was on the unit almost every single day visiting with my daughter . taking your child to a place like this is one of the hardest things you can do as a parent , but I truely am grateful for the care they provided her with . Everyone was beyond kind , supportive and caring in every aspect .

Looking back 17 years, I had the same to say as many reviewers here; the food sucked, the staff was indifferent, no help etc…truth be told, the staff with all their shortcomings are phenomenal, and the food, even the turkey sandwiches, is amazing for institutional food service. The doctors are some of the best in the world! Sooooo, be thankful/grateful you bungled into this top notch organization

I went to western back in February for overdosing on meds. I was an amazing stay and ever since then i have been doing way better. Way better hospital than the other psych hospital i was in. The staff is really sweet and caring. I loved the food, the groups were really fun, and when i had my birthday in there, everyone was so sweet. 10/10 Would recommend.

This is the best place to take someone in distress. They know how to handle any mental health situation and provide the best care. My experience is with my child. We have been to the hospital multiple times since my daughter has been 13. Everytime the process and procedures get better each time starting with the security detail. It amazes me how caring and understanding the security persons are with someone in distress. Very respectful of the situation and always willing to help. Visiting the DEC can be very scary and overwhelming. It is not a pretty place to be - very bleak looking but the staff is very caring and understanding and the security detail is constantly monitoring the rooms.
With a young child, they do keep an eye making sure no one scares them during their crisis. The staff works as quickly as they can to get your child/adult a bed but just be prepared to wait hours - this is a hospital after all. The longest we waited was 36 hours but I was not about to bring my daughter back home and risk further harm. The staff tries to make you as comfortable as they can. Our wait time on the last visit was just 8 hours and we were kept up-to-date on the bed status every 30 minutes. Once your child/adult is admitted, the care ranges from aggressive med management to talk therapy sessions. We always feel that this is the safest place to be when there are extensive med changes since your family member is under 24 hour surveillance. I have to say that the care over the past 8 years has gotten better and better and the facility is more open to holistic change (better food, ability to go outside for fresh air). Thank you for being a wonderful and caring hospital for someone that is going through a very tough time. We are lucky to have this facility in our back yard in Pittsburgh.

My daughter has been a patient many times. The staff has always been wonderful. The wait time in the er is long but they provide snacks and drinks. They do the best they can with the funds and beds they have. I would recommend this hospital. We have been to other psychological centers and they were horrible.

Great Place! Amazing Care! If you have medical issues though, don't go to UPMC, Go to Alleghany General or you can/may, die, UPMC didn't catch, what almost killed my husband, he sought a second opinion, or his friend called an ambulance, saved his life, but told them to take him to General. He has 6 kids, he was at General for 3 months, Thanks for saving his life, he made an almost full recovery, UPMC sent him home with a prescription for Ibuprofen.

I have taken my son here since he was 5 years old, after being run around by every existing doctor in the county and surrounding as well. He is happy, and progressing here with med management and caring staff. I will continue to take him here until he no longer needs my help.

I've had wonderful stability since being apart of the 5 day a week Intensive Outpatient Program. I'm grateful for the tools they equipped me with for problem solving and altering mood fluctuations.

Went in here for anxiety depression and suicidal ideation, and besides the 18 hour wait to get admitted, the treatment was great with kind and caring staff
