Made an appointment for my daughter who was a previous patient of Dr. Austin. She went to him three years ago to get tubes in her ears. Since then we have switched insurance policies so upon making the appointment I asked the woman on the phone TWICE if I needed to verify any information regarding my daughters appointment. She said no TWICE and stated all we needed was her social security card and insurance card. I found this a bit strange that you wouldn't verify patient information BEFORE making an appointment but hey, I trusted her.
So my daughter and her father drive all the way from Natchez, Ms to McComb, Ms only to get to the check in window and have the front desk tell him that my daughter has no insurance and he must pay cash.
First, I'm guessing she prompted an electronic eligibility which showed that her previous insurance with the state of Mississippi was inactive. A task that she should've done while I was on the phone asking her if I needed to verify information with her. Second, she should've asked if my daughter had any new insurance policies instead of immediately telling him to pay cash.
So, yes, while I take responsibility in not forcing her to verify our insurance over the phone and checking to see if they were in network, I still find this whole fiasco extremely inconvenient and costly. All of which could have been avoided if a simple office policy of "Verify all insurances PRIOR to making appointments" would be set in place. It helps get the doctor's office paid by all insurances AND unnecessary appointments being placed on the schedule.
