My partner and I were traveling, we took a 30+ hour flight with connections back to Hartford. Eating at Shu after 30 hours of jet lag and airline food literally saved my life 🥲 I recommend first timers start with the lunch specials at the last page of the menu, even the complimentary soup that comes with the lunch special makes me wanna cry

Shu is always a hit, especially if you are into spicy Szechuan food. It’s not cheap, but it is very good.

The Mapu Tofu and Dan Dan noodles are both a perfect blend of spice and savoriness.

You will definitely need a reservation if you plan to come here on a weekend night for dinner as the restaurant is not very large.

Would also recommend placing an order for takeout, going to shop at A Dong and then picking up after you’re done.

Every dish we ordered came out great: They are all authentic and flavorful. The servers were kind and patient. We especially loved the Szechuan Style Rice Bean Jelly Noodle 成都凉粉.

One of the more authentic Chinese restaurant in the area specializing in Szechuan cuisine. A lot of the dishes uses Sichuan peppercorn, chilli peppers, and chilli oil so if you have a low tolerance for spicy food, go for mild. This is a great place for families as they offer a variety of options catering to all dietary restrictions.

It’s not a typical take out type of Chinese restaurant. Shu is an authentic Chinese restaurant offering spicy Szechuan cuisine. To judge if it’s authentic, we normally see how much and how well they apply Sichuan peppercorns, a special spice with unique aroma that makes your mouth numb. Shu does it just right. Before the pandemic, this place was always crowded, especially on Friday and Saturday night. This year it is much quieter because of the impact of the virus. But every time I ate there, I felt safe. They keep good measures. The food is delicious as always.

Found this gem on Google maps while on vacation. Nice atmosphere, clean, good food, reasonable prices. Not all the dishes were available but everything we ordered was delicious!

I came here for lunch and was excited for spicy Szechuan options. The menu was very large and had some great options. It is a little pricier, $15-25 a dish, so don't come here expecting $8 Chinese food. It was great however, and very fresh and delicious. I'd recommend the shredded duck and spicy dumplings.

This is where I go when I crave Chinese food. Szechuan cuisine is their specialty, though they also offer tamer foods. I love that their food provides different textures. Often, I find it hard to restrict myself to only one cup of rice when dining here. It's just way too delicious.

We went to Shu for lunch. Had Scallion Pancakes (excellent), Kung Pao Shrimp (Wonderful) and Eastern Beef (Good).

There was a lot of Sichuan Pepper in the Kung Pao Shrimp. It is a bit of an acquired taste.

But, the Kungpao shrimp was really good!

Summary: A rare and truly outstanding Szechuan restaurant in West Hartford, CT which rivals prestigious counterparts in NYC and BOS. Patrons can expect authentic dishes with Mala spice (numbing spice), great ambiance, and excellent service. It is recommended to visit with a group and share the dishes family style.

Must Try: Dry & sauteed shredded beef, Chong Qing chicken, and Fish fillet in hot and spicy bowl.
Also recommended: Chengdu dumplings, Steamed pork bellies, Ma la duck, Ma po tofu, and Steamed fish filet with rice jello.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - Outstanding, worth a special excursion

I’ve only gotten take-out, but it is so good every time. I’m vegetarian and my favorites are the cucumbers, the eggplant, and the scallion pancakes. I usually get something with tofu, as well. My partner always goes for wontons and dumplings.

Love the food here. Very authetic Sichuan food. The lobster is very fresh. Fish is my favorite. Dumplings are Sichuan style dipped in the chilly oil sauce. Will definitely come again soon!

This little gem tucked away in the corner of a plaza next to A Dong Market serves up some fantastic Chinese dishes. Nice decor, great service. Clean. All dishes came out looking great. Large selection of dishes to choose from.

Authentic Chinese cuisine. The best Chinese’s food I’ve ever had. My favorite is their king pao chicken and scallion pancakes. Their prices are very moderate too.

Truly authentic Schechuanese cuisine! Owner is a cooking school teacher from Chengdu. Ask for specialties! Service could be a little more enthusiastic but at least they are very efficient.

Gem of a Chinese restaurant in the Hartford area. A pleasant find. Food felt authentic. Felt better than their branch in Fairfield.
