The Carriage House

Beautiful, old and historically important location for the Underground Railroad. Carriages kept here were equipped with hollow/covered areas in the wagon bed for hiding and transporting freedom-seekers. Sometimes these people continued to Canada and sometimes they stayed on at the Bonine farm in an area known as Ramptown (named for the wild onions which abounded at the settlement).
This location was built by the hard-working Quaker pioneers of the Vandalia area- it is currently in the process of restoration by the wonderful and talented people who revived the Bonine House across the street.
