These ships were moved here from various places of the Aral Sea. It is a bit depressing to see this sight knowing that it used to be a vast sea. There are some bigger ships if you walk a little further into the sand.

If you want to go to extraordinary, out of the way places then this is just the spot! One of the most bleakest places on earth I have been to. But a must see to experience what man can do to ruin the environment.

The shop cemetery at Muynak is the living testament to the power of nature and how human actions do indeed change the face of the earth. It is a sad sight in Muynak m, seeing that was once a thriving body of water with wildlife turn into an expanse of just sand and nothing more. The museum is a must-see, and please ask the staff there to show you the video in English. It tells a moving story of this community. Not to be too sad though because there is effort to restore and expand the water surface and we can hope.

Quite profound to see the rusted hulks on what used to be the shore of the Urul Sea. The museum gave a very good presentation of the phenomenon.

When travelling to Uzbekistan, a visit to Muynaq should not be missed, even just to remind oneself of how devasting human actions can be. Be prepared though: it's a rather long drive from Nukus along a spectacularly ill-maintained road.
While there, one can pop in the local museum where photos and videos of the once-upon-a-time thriving fish industry based in Muynaq are displayed. Also on display, some stuffed specimens of local fauna now completely disappeared.

THIS PLACE IS WORTH TO VISIT!
After we arrived to Moynak we thought that ship cemetery is not interesting place. But we were wrong, when i saw this place it gave me different emotions. Amazed-how beautiful was this. Excited-first time to see ships near. Sadness- it was port of Aral Sea which was world's fourth largest sea once...

Advertised place that describes Aral sea tragedy. Other than ship cemetry, there's a museum where in brief you can get dome info about Aral Sea. Very sad place, striving town. If you are feally intetested in this tragedy, you aimed to visit it then it's worth doing it.

Aral Sea

I would like to tell you about a recent trip to the Aral Sea. The trip was made at the end of November, in a rather cool season. Since we turned to the travel agency ‘Besqala’, the SUVs took us from Nukus at 9.30 a.m. Around 1 p.m. we drove to the Muynak and had lunch at a local family’s house. After lunch we visited the local history and Aral Sea museums. Next to the Aral Sea museum there is a ‘Ship Graveyard’, in which you can feel the whole tragedy of the Aral Sea.

Around 4 p.m. we left Muynak to the Yurt Camp at the Aral Sea. On the way, we admired the views and the beautiful sunset. If you have motion sickness, then I advise you to take medicine with you, since the road to the Aral Sea takes about 4 hours and you will drive off-road.

When we reached the Yurt Camp, it was already dark; we had dinner and at night we managed to see the starry sky. It was magical; I think everyone should see such beauty at least once in their life.

We spent the night in yurts, and they were quite comfortable and warm. Since it was almost winter, we watched the sunrise around 8.30 a.m., then we had breakfast and went to the shore of the Aral Sea. The shore was very close to the Yurt Camp, so we got there pretty quickly. The shore was very unusual, there was a lot of foam. I strongly advise you to visit the Aral Sea in the warm season, so you would have the opportunity to swim. On the way back, we visited several historical sites, and also stopped to admire the beautiful views.

Despite the tragedy, the Aral Sea is still extremely beautiful, so I highly recommend everyone to visit it.

This is the "graveyard of ships" where boats used in the old days when this was a lake are lying around.
You can go from one end of the site to the other in 10 minutes. You can leave your car in the museum next to the area.
