Fortress of Alexander the Great

I was surprised to see there were no reviews of this site. We went at sunset which was a perfect way to soak in the city view at the top. It’s a bit of a scramble to get up there (quite steep) so I recommend putting shoes that have a good grip on them. As for the ruins themselves, you’ll see adobe bricks that make out shapes of buildings but just to set expectations, it is in ruins so there isn’t much left to see.

The fort was allegedly built on the orders of Alexander the Great to guard the fertile farming area from steppe raiders. We were told that when finished the garrison was 5000 strong, which is pretty impressive. Hsien and I climbed to the top - rather sweaty and slippery but the views were quite expansive. We saw what I assume were the Nurata Mountains but the fort had just eroded away so the mounds we were climbing was actually mud brick walls and towers that had collapsed and then been trampled. There were a few bits of towers still standing but nothing to give any sense of what it really looked like. It was quite a large site and must have been awesome 2500 years ago but there was no information anywhere with images or reconstruction and I'm not sure whether any digs have actually taken place here.

Ein kurzer Stopp während der Durchreise ist durchaus lohnenswert. Der Aufstieg ist wie beschrieben, feste Schuhe sind empfehlenswert. Der Ausblick ist prima. Es gibt leider keine Infotafeln oder andere Informationen.
