Border Tripoint (AT/IT/SLO)

Highlight of our trip! During our Slovenian holiday, my partner and I took a very cheap bus from Kranjska Gora to Ratece and then walked up to the Three Country Border/Tromeja for the amazing views. You can either walk along the wide meandering track all the way up to the top (or even drive, but walking is better), or about an hour before the top you can break off and walk up the zig zaggy steeper woodland footpath. My partner and I took about an hour and a half to reach the top (although I would allow two+ hours at a nicer slightly more relaxed pace).

The day we visited happened to be the second Sunday of September which we didn't realise was the day of the big annual Tromeja party where there's food, drink and music as the people of Italy, Slovenia and Austria come together and party! There were hundreds of people there! The Slovenian food stall was selling big burgers, the Italian one was selling rigatoni and I didn't see what the Austrian ones were selling. There were also lots of cakes and pastries. Highly recommend that but bring cash for the food and drink.

We then walked the wide track path back down but to Kranjska Gora, which took about 3 hours. The Google Maps route took us off the path nearer Podkoren through a cow field without an obvious footpath, but it did get us to our destination in the end.

A pleasant, steep walk with great views along the way and at the top. Nice to relax on the seating area for a while.

Great hiking place and also skiing place. You cam reach by walking or you can drive also big part of the way up. Still walking is better and there is a steeper path or you can follow the road. Make sure to carry water and food and do not forget that you have to bring back your trash.

From Slovenia, you can drive or walk (2.30 hours).. view is amazing and I liked the idea of going to get a beer in Austria. Worth the visit! Perfect for families as you can drive there and then just have a walk around..

Tromeja / Dreilandereck / Il Triplice Confine is the summit of a rather small mountain Peč / Ofen / Monte Forno in Karawanks range, reaching 1508 m.a.s.l. It is the place where the borders of three countries meet: Slovenia, Austria and Italy, thus giving the name "Triple Border". Actually it is more than just countries - it's the meeting point of three different European ethnic, cultural and language groups - Slavic, Germanic and Roman. The summit is an open ridge with ski-pistes on Austrian slopes and a great panorama of Gailtal, Villach, Villacher Alpe, Gerlitzen Alpe etc. Views of Italy and Slovenia are partly closed by forest but most of Julian Alps can be seen. There are few memorials and monuments that mark the place and an educational trail down the ridge to the east. Really a unique place that has to be visited.

It's good for people of all ages. And there are also 2 routes for you to take. You can go on the newer route that isn't that steep or you can go on the older route that takes you through the forest with a lot of turns.

A must see place in winter. Bestto take sleigh if you come from Slovenia side.

Been here a couple of times, walking up from Kranjska Gora. In thick snow or the middle of summer, the views are amazing and there aren't many places were you can be in three countries at the same time!

Can be reached by car, but the road is slightly rough but, manageable. Not suitable when it's wet and rainy.

Moderate hiking / biking with some of the best views and possibilities to prolong your adventure to any of the three countries.

Great hike and lovely view from the top. Depending of the path you choose and origin you will find yourself alone moat of the trip or always accompanied

With our two wheel drive rental, we made it to the trailhead on the Slovenian side. Then we hiked the switchbacks to the top and enjoyed the grand vistas into Austria, Italy, and Slovenia. We met a young couple on their honeymoon and chatted for a while. It was a great way to begin to wrap up our vacation and a great way for them to start theirs. Lovely day. Fun place.

Stunning views from the tri point here. Hike or E-bike up is a great activity.
