Loads of wildlife in the park, it's easier to hear it than it is to see it though I did get to see a few deer which is rare in Costa Rica. The Casona is a very interesting site and contains a small museum which has information about historical events which happened at the site.

So much sea life sea turtles, dolphins, fish and yes crocodile's. The surf was awsome and nobody around. Make sure to pay the $15 to the national park day pass. All the roads to witch's rock are washed out from hurricane as of 11/05/17 so the only access is by boat....

We were not able to get there the way google maps directed us coming from Playa Grande. I think it was trying to give us a “short-cut” through to rt. 1 instead of having to go up & over thru Liberia. However, this short-cut road was crazy (expected) no cell service (also expected - download an offline map from google) & about an hour on that road it was blocked cause of a huge crater so we turned around & went all the way back to rt 1. Still made it. Get drinks & snacks before cause THERE IS NOTHING at the park for that.

Once you pull in go to the historic site to the left to pay. You definitely don’t want to drive all the way down to the beach to find out you have to go back up to pay. Also - bathrooms are there with staff to help direct you. Cleanest bathrooms ever. The road to the beach is long & takes a while. IIRC 16km & it takes forever cause it’s so rocky but at least you can drive right to the water. It’s about a mile walk to surf by witches rock. WORTH IT.

Santa Rosa is a beautiful place with lots of fauna with monkeys and deers all around and the history around the park is fascinating. Plus, there's a viewpoint in the north part of the park where you can see 3 volcanoes. The only drawback is that is too windy and sometimes there are clouds surrounding the viewpoint. I would recommend that if you are coming from San Jose be prepared for a 6 hour long trip to Guanacaste

I spent 4 months of my life working in Santa Rosa. It was one of my favourite Costa Rican national parks. It's less built up than the other parks and feels more natural. Great birding to be had here if you take the time to explore.

"Nice place to learn about Costa Rica's history"
Going to Santa Rosa was a great experience as, while you enjoy this wonderful place and the beautiful natural scenario it offers, you will be able to learn a small piece of Costa Rica's history. Santa Rosa's dry forest is immense and full of nice things to watch; there is a large variety of wildlife and exuberant vegetation. Visit the museum located in the "Hacienda Santa Rosa" old farm house and re-live one of Costa Rica´s proudest moments in history. There are plenty of walking trails to choose from.

From the National Parks I know so far, almost all of them this is my second favorite after Corcovado. There are a lot of animals, the weather is very nice and Naranjo beach is so beautiful.

An incredible conservation park, very welcoming and supportive of research teams, including our university study abroad trip from Philadelphia University to understand the EcoDiversity in tropical dry forests. I hope to get to return one day.

La casona played an important role in shaping Costa Rican identity , because of the military political events .

Santa Rosa National Park and Liberia City Tour. The Santa Rosa National Park is the most important monuments in the dry forest of freedom after independence. “La Casona” is where in 1856 the Costa Rican army beat a group of filibusters that tried to conquer the whole central American territory.

In 1890 it is purchased by Sacaza family who demolished the casona and builds a new one

The haciendas in Guanacaste had a garden with crops such as cocoa and sugar cane . Haciendas extracted timber and farmed cattle y dairy products.
The battle of Santa Rosa is one of the most important moments of National Campaign . The campaign stemmed from a Civil War between the Liberal and the Conservative parties in Nicaragua from 1854 to 1857 . To win the cause the Democratic Party appealed to William Walker And his mercenaries.
Colonel Lorenzo Salazar with 480 men from San José vs 230 filibusters . The battle lasted 14 minutes. 19 filibusters died and 20 were executed.

The bumpy trail heading to the beach was worth the price of admission alone. We saw some deer and monkeys on a short hike.
