Tree House Lodge

My husband and I had a wonderful three day stay at Tree House Lodge for our Valentine getaway. We travel frequently all over the world, but this was our first visit to Costa Rica and our first Tree House experience. The property is beautiful and the staff friendly and helpful. From the Tree House, it’s a short yet beautiful walk to the private beach and a short walk to nearby restaurants and a mini supermarket/convenient store. We had no desire to leave Tree House Lodge for any excursions, although there are many in the area to choose from. We just simply enjoyed the beautiful, relaxing environment we were in. I do believe my only complaint would be the quality of beach chairs available. There were only three there and they had seen better days and were also chained down so we couldn’t move them to the sun. Although they were nestled under some palm trees in a beautiful spot with a beautiful view. We just like to sunbath on the beach so that was slightly disappointing, but certainly didn’t ruin our stay. Staying in an open-air Tree House in the middle of a Costa Rican jungle listening to the constant sounds of wildlife all around us was truly a unique experience. The sound of howler monkeys throughout the day is really something we will not soon forget! This is a trip we hope to repeat someday.

This place was amazing, we were really immersed in the jungle while being steps away from a private entrance to the beach. The owners were so accommodating and sweet. I really wish we had more time here 3 days was not enough.

The Tree House is a wonderful hideaway. We felt very welcome thanks to Sonja and her team. We were in the treehouse and this place is incredible, charming and special. Our kids loved to sleep “upstairs”, leaving us rhe air conditioned bedroom at ground level. Sonja’s service was extremely friendly and at the same time we felt as if it was just us in the beautiful garden and at the beautiful beach. The area around Punta Uva is definitely worth visiting and the Tree House is a great starting place. Don’t miss out to go to the Jaguar Rescue Centre and to the Otra Vez for amazing food and drinks! We were very happy with our choice and staying at the Tree House will be one memory of our journey we will not forget!

Great location - so fun to stay in the School Bus with kids! Staff was friendly and efficient and the garden was beautiful. Only set back - the doors to the bus from the terrace did not close fully tightly, so mosquitoes did enter and left us with quite a few bites.

What a fantastic place to stay for my first trip to Costa Rica! We booked the jungle tree house for 7 nights, and we really enjoyed everything about the place. The fully equipped kitchen was great for cooking our own meals, making fresh Pina Coladas every day, and the outdoor grill and gazebo area was perfect for an evening fire cookout!
The two bathrooms both offer running water showers and toilets which was a really nice luxury after a full day covered in sand from the beach!
The entire lodge is a short walking distance to the ocean front which was really pleasant on the hot sunny days.
Edsart and Pam are the perfect hosts and we highly recommend their lodging for your next Costa Rican jungle experience!

My wife and I stayed in late November 2023.
I had made the reservation well in advance and planned to spilt our 4 days between the Tree House and the School Bus.
Unfortunately my wife broke two toes about 4 weeks before our arrival. YIKES!!!
After checking in with Sonja she showed us around the Tree House when with careful effort my wife traversed the hanging stairs to the upper bedroom and bathroom.
After learning of her situation she was fairly certain the School Bus was available for our entire stay. While we were both grateful for the thoughtfulness my wife had been anxiously awaiting staying in a Tree House. So we spent one night to cross that off her bucket list.
The Tree House was fantastic!
It’s a magical feeling relaxing surrounded by rain forest. The open air bathroom where the sinks and toilet are maybe bother some for some but honestly all you can see is jungle.
We did the hot tub and had a couples massage in the living room of the Tree House.

The next four days, we added a day, we spent in the School Bus. I thought it was going to be a huge downgrade, but I was wrong.
Sure sleeping in a TreeHouse is bad a** !!!, but the School Bus pulled its weight. For one thing the entire thing, besides the bathroom could be air conditioned. There is a huge covered deck around the bus with a long dining table and another sitting area.
Both the Tree House and the School Bus have kitchens with refrigerator, cooktops, coffee maker…. we usually made breakfast and enjoyed it outside listening to the ocean and birds. You can see( and hear) Macaws flying, toucans, and we would have a daily visit from hummingbirds.

The grounds are incredible and on Sonja’s tour tour she will point out various many different plants flowers and trees. The beach is no more than a couple minutes away. All off the staff are great. They take care off everyone including the grounds and preparing the hot tubs all with being hardly noticeable.
Being the rainy season it really didn’t matter, sure it rains but mainly after 3pm. Sometimes an hour or two, sometimes all night. I enjoyed not having as many people around. It’s easier to take your time and enjoy where you are. Nothing is to far away on the Caribbean side and Punta Uva is close enough while still feeling secluded.

Now about Sonja the hostess/caretaker of the property.
She takes care of absolutely anything and everything. My wife wanted a pedicure and she set it up in Puerto Viejo. She makes sure the staff gets the hot tub ready. Everyday she saw us would ask if we wanted fresh bananas.
Trust me , you want the fresh bananas. YUM
If you need anything just ask Sonja.

Above and beyond

Really enjoyed our stay at The School Bus. It has two bedrooms with a very nice outside area with sitting area and dining table.

The beach is amazing. When we were there, there was little surf, ideal for snorkeling 🤿.

You share 10 acres of jungle with ~4 other cabins so it’s decidedly not crowded.

Sonja at the front desk could not be more thorough and helpful. She lined up a driver, Tune, to transport us from San Jose. This is not an easy drive, especially after dark. I am so glad that I didn’t rent a car.

In the room, they offer some tips like call the front desk if you’d like a hot tub prepared to be used later that day and they’ll do a load of laundry.

It was a great experience

Wonderful place, return in childwood in the scool bus in a tropical garden full of wildlife : birds, morpho buterflies, monkeys, sloth . ... very quiet, just disturb by noisy waves of the beach. Such à great time. Thank you

Wonderful unique place to stay, with lots of things to explore inside and outside the house.
The staff is very friendly and their tour recommendation was helpful.

We stayed in the Tree House which was amazing. Well appointed and a brilliant experience. Sonja on reception was really helpful helping us book tours etc. Several good restaurants 5-10 minutes walk away and the property beach was great for an early morning dip. Highly recommend and we'd love to return.

We first visited the Tree House Lodge in 2012 on our Honeymoon and fell in love instantly. It’s the most peaceful and beautiful experience you could imagine, the houses with everything from the beautiful design and ingenuity to the open air feel with sounds of the jungle and ocean waves. The staff is so incredibly friendly and helpful.

Over a decade later, we were able to visit for a 4th time with our 8 year old daughter and my in-laws. We stayed in the Beach Suite and it was even better than what we imagined. First of all, the bathroom is the coolest room ever. You can completely open the front of the house to reveal the porch, hammocks, jungle and wildlife, along with the path to the private beach just steps away. There are some amazing restaurants and a grocery within walking and biking distance, and Jaguar Rescue is not far!

Pamela and the staff went over and beyond to accommodate and even had fresh pipas for us when we arrived. The concierge was so helpful and knowledgeable.

We appreciate them all so much and look forward to being able to come back again sometime soon! We are so grateful that we have been allowed to share the space from time to time

My most favorite place I stayed in while in Costa Rica! The whole property itself is breathtaking, only takes a few minutes to see the bounty of wildlife around you- sloths, monkeys, and iguanas! I stayed in the Garden House which was complete with everything I needed from the kitchen to the hot tub. Only a few minutes walk to a private beach. You will not be disappointed staying here!

What wonderful pleasant 3 nights at this marvelous site.
We took "the bus" for our stay and never regreted that. It has a history of its own before it became an apartment which can be learned by a plate on the side or, if you're lucky and the owner has a little time, tells you the story himself. Options for laundry/dry tumbler is there and the surroundings are always good for a discovery walk at the beach, visit the herb garden or any restaurant there is nearby. It was for us a perfect place to rest from all the adventures we already went through. Ease your soul in a hammock and enjoy the sun & Caribbean Sea & more, if you like to. (horse rides, surf & bicycle rent )

Enough can’t be said about how COOL this place is! Private access to the beach, grounds are super secluded, super friendly staff! My kids LOVED the suite we rented! I feel they need to better describe how BIG the suite is, it’s big enough for two family’s or a family and grandparents etc. we stayed one night at the “cottage” we called it, and then two nights at the beach suite.. and it felt like camping in the jungle!!! If you don’t mind roughing it a bit more than a resort .. making your own meals OR going for a walk or car ride to the city for food.. this place is Well worth the journey !! They even did some laundry for Us, and I was able to text any time I needed anything and the staff was prompt in delivering … the beach suit has a main house .. then an additional air con room and shower area.. the “cottage” was more simple but has a super awesome comfy bed and really fun outdoor hot tub. This place is rated 10/10 for Us!!!

We had a wonderful time! We ( 2 adults, 2 kids- age 7 & 12)stayed Nov 2022 for 3 nights in the beach house. We knew we would be staying in the jungle and we were not disappointed! Everyone was so super nice! They even texted us on what’s app when they spotted a sloth so my girls could come see it! And helped me with a Caribbean chicken recipe after we got home! A very unique experience! Tips: Be sure to bring bug spray- especially in November ( the lizards will try to help, but you still need protection from mosquitoes and no see ums), Remember you are staying in the rainforest- there are bugs, lizards, spiders, and ants.. (all food needs to be in sealed containers) and we had some very noisy green macaws that woke us up every morning very early.. But embrace the Pura Vida lifestyle and enjoy the butterflies and seeing Green Macaws In the wild! The beach in front of the lodge was really rough while we were there (most beaches we went to were and we visited 5) but it was great to build a sandcastle and get your toes wet! This place is a definite fun stay!

Our stay at the Crystal House at the Tree House Lodge was truly wonderful and made our trip memorable. The location is perfect, just a 5-10 minutes drive from the center of Purto Viejo town, and the property is located right on the ocean. The house is one of a kind in its architecture and art. Being an architect myself I was blown away by the overall design and by every detail. The living room and kitchen area is large and open and has an indoor-outdoor feel, you get to hear the birds in the morning. While the Bedrooms are enclosed, cozy and comfortable. The beds, the mattresses, and the linens are luxurious and of the highest quality, which you would expect in a 5-star hotel. We also loved how close it is to the beach, the property borders on the Caribbean coast. Management was always available to assist with whatever tourist info we needed.

We had an amazing time during our stay! The beach house was unique and beautiful. We took so many showers in the gorgeous bathroom. :-)

We stayed a week in Beach Ho at Tree House Lodge. This is a very unique house. Only sound is the ocean and the monkeys. It’s a great place to relax and also there are many trips to do from here. A car is preferable. We took to the beach in Cocles and Punte Uva. Jungle walk in Manzanillo, Chokolade tour.

This review is late but I think still important due to all of the wonderful memories we have from Tree House Lodge (especially important during this pandemic when travelling is restricted). We visited in Christmas of 2016 and still today, over 5 years later, we still talk about our “Costa Rica trip” regularly. We have beautiful pictures in our house in Canada from the trip and all of the kids remember the stay so fondly. We loved the the beach, the restaurants near by (Pita Bonita, Selvins, fresh bread each day) and all the wild life! Especially the sound of rain on the tin roof! This was a trip we will never forget ❤ thank you for the happy memories ❤

We had the BEST TIME at Puerto Viejo in Costa Rica and at The Tree House Lodge! The staff (and Maria) were awesome with every inquiry about island tours, taxi, laundry, supplies, restaurants. from the moment we arrived to the moment we were placed on our well organized Taxi back to the Airport. Just awesome! The downside (?) We landed in San Jose too late to take the inter Island plane to Puerto Viejo. But Maria arranged for a driver to pick us up and DRIVE US 8 hours to the Lodge. Great island tour, but i would recommend a Night's stay in San Jose and take the short plane ride the next day if you arrive too late to catch the last flight
