Awesome experience visiting Don Julio Toaquiza, the father of Tigua painting. Premier Tigua painter, Don Julio Toaquiza, was first approached by gallery dealers in Quito to create the first 2D Tigua folk art paintings. These paintings are high gloss paintings on sheep skin that typically depict Andean life, culture, festivals, Mother Nature (Pachamama), the Andean condor, Andes Mountains, and Cotopaxi. They evolved from paintings on drums and masks. His paintings are found in galleries and museums around the world. His family members are prolific painters loaded with talent. You must invest in at least one (if not more because they’re great in collections) Tigua painting while in Ecuador and what better way than to meet the artists and buy them straight from the artists themselves! Next door to Don Julio’s gallery you will find other great masters like Alfredo Toaquiza. Across the street there is even more! It’s a must see!

If your interested in Ecuadorian Folk Art this is the place to come as the artist is the founder of that school of art. Beautiful paintings and great folk art books.

Original painter which produces his art on canvases made of leather. The art depicts traditional Kichwa legends and traditions. Prices start at 25 dollars but you can bargain if you speak spanish and buy more than one painting.
