Parador de Alcañiz

In the more pure tradition of Paradores, this is located in the place of a medieval castle that once was managed by Calatrava military monks.

The castle of Alcañiz was built in the 12th century by the Order of Calatrava, a Christian military order founded in the 12th century to fight against the Muslims. The castle was used as a fortress, palace and prison throughout the centuries. In the 19th century, the castle was abandoned and fell into ruins.

In 1968, the Spanish government decided to restore the castle and convert it into a Parador de Turismo. The restoration was completed in 1973 and the hotel opened its doors that same year.

This is place for some of the most relevant moments in Spain history (La Concordia de Calatrava) that can be considered a turning point in the creation of the current Kingdom of Spain.

As usual the service and food are simply top notch.

The castle is located 5 minutes away from the Plaza de España in the old town, where you can visit the big Santa Maria Mayor church, the city council and the underground tunnels and ice house, all well worth the visit. But be aware the castle is on the top of a hill overlooking the town, so be ready for some exercise coming back to the Parador and bring some confortable shoes....

We spent a long weekend in the Hotel and thoroughly enjoyed our time there and the food.

An amazing regal experience. Our first Parador hotel. Didn't eat in the restaurant but had a club sandwich in the bar which was a meal in itself!

Only negative was Google Maps wanting to take us through the back streets - probably the most direct route on paper! - both to and from. Helpful locals escorted / put us on the best route. 😳

Another absolutely fabulous Parador Hotel in Alcañiz from start to finish!!
A beautiful historic Convent building attached to the 12th century castle offers spectacular views over Alcañiz and surrounding countryside.
So clean with friendly and helpful staff made our stay (4 people) very enjoyable.
The walk down to the Historic Center is only a few minutes (depending on how fit you are a bit longer to get back up the hill and stairs).

Here they really bring the fine art of hospitality into practice!! On every aspect a score of 11 out of 10. Could be one of the best Paradores. Great historical building, well maintained, ambiance is great, very nice staff, great bed- and bathroom and the breakfast and overall service is really great. It was a “feliz” to stay here … in a great historical environment! We were here now for the 7th time & We”ll come back later!

A really distinctive building with great facilities including premium food and service. Well run and in great condition so worth the steep walk up-hill to get there. Car parking is also possible. Superb views over the surrounding countryside. A cultural icon. I will visit again and my friends said the same.

An interesting location which you have to drive along a narrow, winding road to get to. Our room had a good view over the town. Tours of the castle are run daily, for a few euros and these are in Spanish and run by an outside agency. The only disappointment in the room was the shower which was not terribly powerful and needed a long time to warm up. We discovered the black out curtains on our second night, useful because of the spotlights. Staff were friendly, food was fairly typical Parador fare.

I love this Parador. It is well located, near to the historical centre of the town. It is comfortable, has great staff, really good food and restaurants, great lounges, an excellent bar. To top it all, a superb historical tour, of the parts not usually open to the public, which is very interesting. I have stayed twice. I will return.

Romantic and historic hotel in an interesting Aragon town. Really recommend, restaurant is SO GOOD. Courtyard is a beautiful place for an aperitif. We saw a choral concert in the ancient part of the castle. Local town is great with lots of dining options and it's a good location to explore surrounding towns and beauty spots.

Amazing restored castle converted into a hotel though the oldest and interesting parts, like the rare and ancient pictures in the church and Homage tower, have to be seen in a guided tour.

Beautiful place to stay.
The Paradores I think are always an excellent choice. This one is a heavily restored palace with a lot of charm. The rooms are spacious and comfortable.

Lovely stay. The attendants are all very nice, the food was good, and walking around the castle in the morning really rounds out a pleasant nights stay.

One of my favorite paradors, beautiful and extremely clean. The restaurant is one of the best in the area with very good menu and reasonable prices.

Beautiful medieval building with the perfect temperature inside and very attentive staff. Well worthy a visit.

We enjoyed the dinner in this restaurant of the Parador. I especially like the ensalada which was very fresh and with cooked potatoes and beans

Great location, like all Paradors. Nothing to say about service at the hotel. Uncomfortable bed, room needs deep cleaning, but lots to see in the old town!
