Very little remains of Kilpeck Castle which was built just after the Norman invasion in 1090 and stood upon an impressive motte and surrounded by extensive earthworks. It was originally a shell keep that overlooked a medieval settlement which has long gone and also the St Mary’s and St David’s church which was built at the same time and a real gem of a place to visit. A bit of a climb but possible for most people. Came for the castle but captivated by the view. Small parking area outside the church and the Kilpeck Inn is only a couple of minutes away for refreshments and food.

Interesting castle ruins right next to Kilpeck Church, which is fantastic. The corbel carvings are terrific. Go.

Not a great deal to see, but worth the short walk from Kilpeck Church to admire the view.

Kilpeck, on the St Thomas Way, is the archetypal borderland location. The ruined motte-and-bailey castle with its earthworks was probably first established around 1090, as the administrative centre of the surrounding area of Archerfield. There are also traces of a lost medieval village immediately to the east of the church.

This area was part of the Welsh kingdom of Ergyng, until it fell under the control of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Mercia from the ninth century. After the Norman Conquest, Kilpeck was in the Welsh Marches – the border region controlled by Anglo-Norman lords – and became a part of Herefordshire in the sixteenth century.

Fast 1000 Jahre alte Gemäuer.
Es ist leider nicht mehr viel übrig, aber die tolle Landschaft und der Gedanke an die ehemalige Erscheinung der Burg lohnt sich alle Male.
