In 1093 when King Ladislaus I of Hungary (1040-1095) moved the bishop's chair from Sisak to Zagreb, he proclaimed the existing church as a cathedral. Construction on the cathedral started shortly after his death and was finished in 1217 and consecrated by king Andrew II of Hungary. The building was destroyed by the Mongols in 1242 but rebuilt by bishop Timothy (1263–1287) a few years later. At the end of the 15th century, the Ottoman Empire invaded Croatia, triggering the construction of fortification walls around the cathedral, some of which are still intact. In the 17th century, a single fortified renaissance watchtower was erected on the south side and was used as a military observation point, because of the Ottoman threat.
The cathedral was severely damaged in the 1880 Zagreb earthquake. The main nave collapsed and the individual tower was damaged beyond repair. The restoration-reconstruction of the cathedral in Neo-Gothic style was led by Hermann Bollé, bringing the cathedral to its present form. As part of that restoration, two spires 104 m (341 ft) high were raised on the western side, both of which are now in the process of being restored as part of an extensive general restoration of the cathedral. Neogothic cathedral of Zagreb. 100-200 meters from Ban Josip Jelačić square. It is one of the symbols of Zagreb. The cathedral is damaged in the 2020. earthquake, so the renovation is going to be even longer now. It is sad, they really did come close to finnishing it (like, 2-3 years away... Believe me, that is close for our cathedral).
Nevertheless it is stil beautiful site from outside and inside. ❤🇭🇷

It is simply stunning. Inside the cathedral, your eyes pop out with so much beauty and magnitude. The church's stained glass windows are delicate and tell us a story. It is interesting to see the sun naturally illuminating them.

The largest church in town, severely damaged in the 2020 earthquake, so it is under reconstruction.

It's a beautiful cathedral, but there is no entry allowed, since it's under reconstruction ( because of the earthquake that hit Croatia in 2020). Still, it's a must see when coming to Zagreb.

It's quite tall, the tower on the right hand side it's currently under restoration.
Inside its beautiful and inviting.
A really amazing scene that i saw there was a group of 4 Muslim inside, lightening a candle, leaving some change into the charity box and totally respecting even though is not their religion.
As a non religious person, that makes me really happy to witness that harmony is still possible in this currently chaotic world.

Beautiful Place and It Is so Easy to achive

Even if I say amazing, it is not enough. You can see part of the Cathedral from all over the capital, and I could imagine the effect of this view for the people of the past. If you think that the exterior it's the best part, go inside and you will be surprised by the beauty of the interior. This is absolutely a must.

Beautiful place, on a small hill, visible from almost all places in Zagreb.
Unfortunately it is being renovated and will be finished in like 100 years.
Also it has been damaged in 2021 in Zagreb earthquake, so it's tops had to be removed for repairment.
But it's still a sight to behold, so be sure to visit 🙂

I must admit that it is one of the most beautiful cathedrals I have ever seen and I cannot understand why it is so underrated. I have seen it only externally unfortunately because it is being restored but really, only from the outside does it leave you a sense of unique wonder!! If you are in the lower city, you have to do a bit of a climb but it is absolutely worth it! Each meter is pure wonder, believe me

A monument of Mediaeval gothic architecture, it's like the symbol of Zagreb. One flare fell down during the earthquake of March, 2020 and the other was removed to avoid further risks. One of the towers is also being repaired due to the effect of rain on limestone. Currently closed. Really impressive as you approach the building. Photos are before and after the earthquake, when the flares were replaced by two crosses.

Imposing and amazing work of art, dedication and effort. Its hard to imagine how such beautiful yet huge structures were created in those days. The faith and commitment seems impregnable.

Beautiful, unique, special! Even though there is often restorations being done around it is worth seeing it! It is so beautiful from inside. If you are not local I would recommend getting a tour person to tell you all the stories about it and to show you around. Have fun!

Amazing! You must go up the bell tower to see the view above Split.

The cathedral is not open for the public (due to renovation work; an earthquake made some massive damages in 2020) but you can still see it greatness.

Beautiful building, but we’re not permitted inside due to work following the earthquake a couple of years ago.
