Must place to visit if you're in Budapest or you visit as a tourist . This is the oldest church and is situated in Esztergom where you can take a local train from Budapest. You can take a peaceful walk before the Church premises and we need a ticket to have a look from top view. We can see the Slovakian bridge from the backside of the monument. Treasure kept inside is worth watching and the relics of kings are kept safe.

A great day out with family. The weather was perfect for a walk around the top of the dome. 400 steps up inside the Basilica and then a walkway around the outside, not for the faint hearted. I'm glad we went. The views were spectacular. It's worth visiting even if you don't want to go to the top. The treasury and crypt are well worth visiting.

Absolutely amazing experience, georgeous and huge building inside and outside! Must be visited once! Outside is a lovely walking space with a view point as well.

Under construction for a long time but, it's a great place to visit with a great view!

Even with the construction site it is impressive. To see how they rebuild it is actually a nice extra.
To climb the stairs to the cupola is fun. Start from the Alley of Cats!
Well organized and clean.
It would be even better if there were no cars and parking directly in the front, cars just make the scenery ugly.
Prepare yourself with some history of Esztergom before visiting.

If you're looking for a really cool place to visit, you should check out the Basilica of Esztergom. It's a big, beautiful church that's super old and has lots of interesting things to see.
One of the best parts is the really tall tower you can climb to get a great view of the whole city. It's a little bit of a hike, but totally worth it for the awesome views. And don't forget to look up at the ceiling inside the church – there are some really cool paintings and decorations up there.
There are also lots of statues and artwork around the cathedral that are really fun to look at. My favorite was a big, shiny crown that's hanging in one of the rooms. It's super fancy and sparkly, and it was used by lots of important people a long time ago.
Overall, the cathedral of Esztergom is a really neat place to visit. I bet you'll have a great time exploring all the different parts of it. Just make sure to be respectful and quiet while you're inside the church part. Happy exploring!

The top of the dome going up by foot is very nice and I can see the beautiful view to Esztergom and also Štúrovo.
Inside and outside are under renovation, however it‘s good experience to see the components of the basilica.

I didn’t expect that we will like it so much! The basilica is huge once you get in front of the main entrance and is even more impressive inside. We got the full ticket for the treasury and crypt and I must say, the crypt was very interesting and a bit creepy, in a good way. It is the perfect day trip from Budapest.
Only negative was that when we visit (Feb 23), it was under reconstruction and we couldn’t enjoy the full beauty of it.

Beautiful Basilica even with the reconstruction going on. I would reccomend crossing the bridge into Slovakia and taking a photo across the river.

This is a gorgeous Basilica! If you are in the area, you must make time to visit this place! Make sure you make time to walk the Basilica grounds and get up to the top of the church. The view from the top is amazing! If you are planning to get up to the top, make sure you can handle walking lots of stairs and you are ok with tight spaces.

Named as the mother of church in Hungary. However, the other important point is here was captured by Ottoman Turks in 16th century. Ottomans ruled here for 150 years. After the conquest, this place remained as a church that was not converted into a mosque, contrary to tradition.

It is simply HUGE. Must visit from Budapest. It’s super close and the view from there it’s very nice. Also cross the border to Slovakia 🇸🇰 it’s recommended. There’s a small art exhibition at the entrance which was, surprisingly, good. All in all a great day trip

Beautiful basilica, absolutely huge, dominating the skyline. It's best seen from across the river on the Slovak side or directly in front to see its true size. Can walk around the exterior for views of the river and Slovak countryside. Highly recommend.

One of the Must Visits in Hungary. #esztergom is a city in northern #Hungary around 45 km from the capital, Budapest. The right bank of the #Danube forms the county's border with Slovakia. Between the 10th to Mid-13th centuries, Esztergom was Hungary's capital until 🤴 Béla IV of Hungary relocated the royal seat to Buda 😀. Also some pictures at St.Thomas Hills, another Village in Esztergom.

The beautiful place that I recommend to visit for everyone who plans to visit Hungary, the Basilica is an hour's drive from Budapest by car, nearly to the Basilica there is a view point to the Danube and Slovakia.
In the Basilica there is an icon made on a single canvas and also the relics of saints. For those who plan to visit this place, it’s worth including in the travel plan also Szentendre and Sturovo (Slovakia).

A very large and beautiful basilica, currently undergoing renovations, you can tour it free of charge, beautiful paintings from the inside. Great view of the Danube from the outside and a view of Slovenia opposite. Large parking in front of the basilica. There aren't many people around so you can leisurely stroll there.

Wasn't very excited visiting the place due to the limited knowledge on the subject matter, but was thoroughly amazed by the sheer size and the feat of architecture. Built almost 150 years ago this is considered the highest building in Hungary and like the top most catholic church.
Photos do not do justice to the amazing dome and huge pillars, you got to see it to absorb the enormity of the place. The door to the Basilica is massive in comparison to us tiny humans.
They hav the skeletal remains of the head for few of the Bishops in the curch and it's fascinating to observe.
The view for the top is truly amazing and worth it.
The crypt below has the burials of all major arch Bishops who presided over the basilica over the years.
Do not forget to visit the castle with its own past adjacent to the church which is a museum now and holds the evidence to the diffrent regimes that ruled over the place.
All in all a wonderful experience, it takes almost 5 hours to see both the Basilica and the castle. Be ready to spend the entire day out there.

The entrance fee is rather cheap, and the basilica is really beautiful. You can see it from far away, since it's quite big. The interior is just as nice, I really liked the lookout tower (Only the lower one is currently available, the other one is under repair) and the church part.
The crypts are not the best, but it's a part of the history of the basilica and as such should not be ignored.

Beautiful, well preserved (often renovated), large church. One of the shining diamonds of Hungary. Pretty close to Budapest, easy, very nice day trip. Well worth the time and effort. Also, Esztergom has many great restaurants after visiting Basilica and other important sites. Have fun everyone.

As of March 2024 there is a considerable restoration project being carried out in the basilica. This of course can’t be helped, old buildings need this. The treasury and crypt (both ticketed) are currently open. The staff were very friendly and helpful and for that reason they get five stars. Disappointed with the UNAVOIDABLE renovations but at least I got to venerate Cardinal Mindszenty!
