Istano Basa Pagaruyung

Beautiful & huge traditional castle from the Kingdom of Pagaruyung. This one is actually the third replica, after the first and the second caught in fire.

Such a masterpiece in architectural design, have look closer to the pillars inside where they have few degrees non-straight structure.

The carving is mesmerizing as well. I suggest you to come on the weekdays and after 3pm to have more time walking around, admiring every single details of the castle.

I had the pleasure of visiting Istano Pagaruyung in West Sumatra a couple of years ago and was truly amazed. Located just about an hour's drive from Bukittinggi, it's easily accessible and worth the trip. Back then, there were still some art displays that added depth to the experience. However, after the fire in 2007, many of these displays are no longer available. Despite that, the architectural grandeur of the palace and its rich history provide a unique glimpse into the Minangkabau culture. The surrounding landscape remains serene, amplifying the overall ambiance. Entry is reasonably priced, with tickets for adults around 15k rupiah or roughly 1 USD. Even without the art, Istano Pagaruyung remains a beautiful destination that's worth every penny and moment. The guides were knowledgeable and shed light on fascinating insights. Highly recommended for those wanting to delve into Indonesia's cultural heritage.

Beautiful Minang castle. No queue as I went to it early in the morning. I went to the third floor to view more beautiful nature in the surroundings of this area.

I visited Pagaruyung in Aug 2023, palace with a spacious location for spot photo. Despite having experienced a fire few years ago. it still retains n historical charm, especially with d lingering nostalgic vibes and the somewhat eerie atmosphere adds to the unique experience

The place you must visit in West Sumatera. Legendary Traditional Minang Palace. Great architecture with three levels of building, nice scenery, spacious parking area. nice facility, unfortunately the stalls are mostly empty.
You can rent the traditional Suntiang Dress for photos.

Good palace, nice people, have a great memories overhere, near a good restaurant with good taste of ikan dan ayam bakar, near of mosque and clean place

Huge historical place.. wonderful architecture...

Very nice place to see. The local craft reveals here with very fine wood craft, from the floor to the wall, window even the schilling. Nice local tourism spot.

But some of the people in costumes will always enter frame when you taking pictures. Later they demand for donations. This is what I really irritated.

Should visit this place. Best part is got several open space shops selling souvenirs much cheaper than near the hotels.

It' a beautiful place and great architecture building as well. Too bad, it was raining when I came so the view of the sky is not really clear.

If you come to Bukit Tinggi you must visit this cultural place. You can rent their cultural custome and take photos for memories, you can also hire a personal photographer there to take your photo

Old Palace of previous regional sultan. Feel the history when you walk through. Enjoy the traditional building style based on the horns of the karbouw (qurbun). Building is totally made of highly decorated wood with a roof of palm leaves. Walls partially from bambu.

The replica of Istano Basa Pagaruyung (Grand Palace of Pagaruyung), which we visited and witnessed, shows how magnificent the Minangkabau cultural heritage and history are. This palace was first built in 1804, but was burned several times, namely in 1804 during the Padri War, in 1966 and in 2007 due to lightning strikes.

Visitors who come here, apart from being able to see Minangkabau culture which enriches Indonesian cultural values, can also take pictures wearing traditional Minang clothing for rent. There is now a more spacious parking lot on the southeast side of the palace.

Is a palace that become a museum. Real large area, cheap entrance fee, so much knowledge about the origin of the palace itself. You can try their tradisional uniform (with fee). Great place for instgram pictures also!

A cultural spot that's not to be missed when you visit West Sumatera ... this huge three level building with horn-shaped roof is a replica built based on the old Palace of Pagarruyung Kingdom.

The current building holds several royal regalia from the old Kingdom.
