A lovely long tunnel that is now FREE !!
It saves so much time going through it rather than around as well.
Lit inside.
No queues.
Speed cameras inside tunnel.
It's very long, but don't speed.

Another feat of engineering on the ring road, but unlike the other tunnels we drove through, this one goes under a fjord. Used to be tolled but now that the costs have been recovered, it's free. There are speed cameras in here, so we were careful of our speed, especially on the downslope. Evidently, other drivers behind us were trying to get fined. The northbound side has a passing lane on the way up and out, but not the southbound side.

On our trip to Iceland we were heading to the house we had rented using Google maps. We had no idea we were in a tunnel under the water until we came out on the other side and realized it. There were no signs of water in the tunnel and it was well lit. An amazing experience. After researching the tunnel I discovered it was about 4 miles long and 540 feet below sea level. Before construction it would take about an hour to get to the other side of the fjord which now takes 7 minutes. After 10 years of tolls the tunnel was paid for and then it was free to use. This is something you never see in the USA.

A fantastic engineering feat. I was surprised how long it actually is! But be careful, average speed cameras through the entire thing!

Impressive tunnel.
When you decent steeply in the tunnel, you start realizing that you're driving under a fjord !! Cool !!

Longest tunnel we've ever been through, pretty cool to be under water.

The tunnel is toll free. The sign is for when it was not. A few years ago.

Toll Free. This is a great tunnel to pass through if you're in a rush. It should be stated again as there seems to be some old and very unhelpful reviews and articles but this is now toll free.

A tunnel under the sea. No toll, no traffic, cut down travel time significantly. Amazing

An unusually long tunnel that shortens the trip out to the national park. Not that much traffic for high tourist season.

Interesting undersea tunnel. Moreover, it's toll free (January 2022).
