Shaumari Wildlife Reserve

We arrived here from Amman at about 2pm because our hotel room was not ready yet and we had some time to spent. It looked very empty, just two more cars were at the entrance, so we were not sure if it was even open. When we came to the entry, we were greeted immediately and told them that we want to do the 1 hour safari tour. We were able to use the toilets in the visitor center and although we were only two persons, the guide waited for us with a car outside and immediately started the tour. He told us a lot of interesting things and we saw some bucks. It was a very nice tour! Thank you

A small reserve committed to the preservation and reintroduction of rare animal species into Jordan. An excellent and well informed guide took us round the reserve. My sole interest was to see Arabian Oryx in their natural habitat, and was delighted ti do just that.

It's first wildlife reserve in Jordan and it was established in 1975 by the Royal Society For The Conservation of Nature (RSCN) as a Breeding Center for the Endangered Animals in the Middle East such as the Arabian Oryx and Sand Gazelle and Asiatic Wild Honger and Houbarah Bustard ant the other unique kinds and you can enjoy in this reserve by making arabian oryx Safari tour in converter jeep (african style) or Cycling tour or Hiking trail.

We took the safari and we enjoyed the experience. The driver and guide was very knowledgeable not only of the fauna but also the flora. We stopped a few times to see up close some of the local shrubs learning about their features and properties. We saw a good number of Oryxes roaming free. What a memorable thing to see these splendid creatures in their original ancestral habitat!

The Shaumari Wildlife Reserve Visitor Center does a very good job introducing the geology, flora and fauna of the region of Jordan's Eastern Badia to the visitor. Information signs complete with diagrams and maps allow one to learn loads in a very friendly way. Signs are in English and Arabic.

For those with an eye for history and archaeology, there are two cases that contain carved basalt blocks one with a floral representation of a palm tree and a the other with the mythological creature of Pegasus. They come from the Umayyad Period reservoir located in the other RSCN Reserve of Azraq. Most other carved slabs are exhibited in one of the rooms of the Azraq Castle.

Next to the Visitor Center there is a children's playground for the little ones complete with good shade, slides, swings and see-saws. There's even a sun dial on the floor.

Wonderful Safari to see the oryx and onegar. Our guide was very knowledgeable of all the birds and plants too.

A great project to protect animals in a crazy desert full with hunters.

Very special place in Jordan, the staff are friendly and the guide was nice and knowledgeable (Hasan), the animals look on great shape, it was a unique experience but u must take into consideration the temperature and the time of year you are visiting as it is letteraly in the desert.

Saw plenty of Oryx. If you like animals and nature, this is a hidden secret you should visit and support. Just make sure to visit early in the day, definitely before noon, to see more of the animals and make it for the safari tour.

It is a wonderful place with welcoming, warm hearted and intelligent staff members. The safari tour is highly recommended - pre bookings advised-, it is a real adventure, you have a chance to see the rare Arabian oryx, a magnificent endangered animal alongside the also endangered Persian Onager and if you're really lucky the desert gazelles. The atmosphere is worth a visit, you can learn a lot about the area, its nature and history.
Plus picnic with local - very delicious - hot cup of tea which will be made and served right there in the middle of the reserve by your guide.
We would like to thank to our guide, Amar (sorry if misspelling) Shawmari, the amazing time and experience.

My experience at Shawmari Reserve was magnificent, the place is really one of a kind and cool to visit with a group of friends or with family.

The staff at the reserve were really nice especially our tour guide Ammen ( امين الشومري), his enthusiasm and energy alone about the reserve made the trip even better.

We were a group of friends ( 3 people ), took the long trail bike trip around 14 km and throughout the trip saw some rare animals with the binoculars that they gave us that only exists in the reverse, we really enjoyed the nature and wildlife there.

The only downside was we had to pay for 5 people and we were 3 because the minimum group to ride the bike is 5 people so we ended up paying 40 JD as a total(as Jordanins), plus we really wished that the bikes were a bit more better shape so that in long rides we are more comfortable to drive around in that narrow road.

The best reserve I have ever been to. The most beautiful wildlife with rare animalsThe best time when we saw Arabian orxy , somali ostriches and gazelles. I suggest Ms Barb to visit it.

The family enjoyed the safari experience and the interesting wildlife of Shawmari. The safari was conveniently interrupted with a tea break prepared with local herbs from the reserve itself. It was such a nice and tasty gesture.
