Mathota Ancient Royal Temple|මාතොට පුරාණ රාජ මහා විහාරය(පුරාවිද්‍යා ස්ථානය- Archaeological Site)

This is a historical temple in the Mannar district where there are no Sinhalese. Sangamitta Maha Thera who came to Dambakola Patuna with a sapling of the Sri Maha Bodhi in Sri Lanka visited the temple at Mathota Rajamaha Viharaya. The Viharadhipathi Thero is making a great effort to preserve this temple amidst the difficulties of a thousand Buddhist monks.

peaceful place and also it has heavy historical value..this place is look after by kind heart monk who is building these temple again..many archaeological ruins can seen under the bodhi tree..feel peaceful every time i visit there

Has a massive Bo tree with branches covering a large area and the shade underneath the sacred Bo tree amidst strong sea wind gives a feeling not experiencied at any other place. Has a very historical significance as this Vihara is near one of the largest sea ports of ancient Lanka.

Only budhist temple that is available in Mannar District. This place is believed that Sangamiththa Theri had strayed some time and tool rest during the journey from Jaffna to Anuradhapura, while bringing the Sri Maha bhodi brqnch from India. However, after some times it was disappeared for public due to numerous invations. However during the Civil war period also this place was gradually destroyed and later it was consructed with help for 3 forces including police station in Mannar. More over some doctors and professionals are also helping to build this temple.

Situated in a quaint town in Mannar is the historic Mathota Rajamaha Viharaya, believed to have been a flourishing monastery long time ago. The temple has been named after the ancient port of Mahathiththa, which was also known as the port of Mathota in Mannar.
A stone inscription belonging to the Tenth Century AD, discovered from the temple grounds reveal of a meritorious act performed by an unnamed king in Salahu in Mannar.
