There are two separate water treatment plants called labugama and kalatuwawa. Permission is required for accessing both labugama and kalatuwawa reserviors. Great views and lovely nature as well. Must feel the environment.

Heart of Colombo’s water supply. There are two separate reservoirs and accompanying forest reserve can be observed within this high secured environment. Labugama and Kalatuwawa have its own water purification plants and in Kalatuwawa it consists a 2 turbine electricity generating system. You can stay at the Kalatuwawa circuit bungalow by obtaining permission from the head office. You need an offer to accompany you during the stay. There’s a cook to serve goods you have bought.

Saw and learned about this rainforest as part of the reservoir dam tour on the Seethawaka Odyssey tourist train trip. Its a restricted access area. The rain water catchment from this forest is collected in the two resevoirs within it. Its then purified and supplies clean drinking pipe water to Colombo city and suburbs.

This forest is the only remaining piece of a vast ancient rainforest in the Colombo district. In ancient times, this rainforest covered a much larger area. It was cleared to make way for settlements and rubber and tea plantations during dutch and british colonial era.

Even within this reserve some parts were cleared and replanted during the dams construction. So you dont find many large and ancient trees within it. Most old trees are about 50-75 years old. Natural rainforest regrowth can be observed here.

One of the most wonderful forest reserves I've been into. Not much of a hike and you will have to cross a water steam In a small raft (a small charge included was 40 per person 2019 July ). And the office charge a ticket ( a small amount). The forest was rarely touched by humans and the water steams were refreshing to see. A good place for a low budget trip with a less amount of hiking with a gang. Leeches might be a problem in humid weather but precautions can be taken. On the top the water falls and the natural pools are a rewarding sight to see.

This is one of the best water supply projects. Mainly supplies drinking water to the Colombo and suburbs. This has a reserved forest call Labugama kalatuwava. There are many small water falls and spots for bathing. you should obtained prior admission to visit this location. You can enter after turning right (whem you are going down from Colombo side) of the Kaluaggala junction. Nice , cleanest area and it is your responsibility to to protect for furture.

It is true that a beautiful environment. But this is a high reserve and is a major source of drinking water. In short, it's not a "place to having some fun" Because, in recent times, I saw that people who came here had dumped garbage and liquor bottles, especially polythene and that they were damaged to the forest
