A large international airport with clean facilities, friendly staff and two separate terminals for domestic and international flights. A new terminal, for international flights, A small variety of pricey shops and restaurants are available, but most are open 24 hours.

One big Srilanakn asset.Great infrastructure & a big airstrip which a Boeing 777 can easily land, relatively bigger than Bandaranayake Intl Apt. Well organized and nicely decorated. Sad thing is only fly dubai & charted aircarfts lands here.

MRIA was opened in March 2013 by President Mahinda Rajapaksa, who ordered the construction of the airport. Initially, several airlines flew to the airport, including SriLankan Airlines which established a hub. However, due to low demand, most of these airlines left Mattala.

Due to the low number of flights, it has been proposed to offer long-term aircraft parking services as well as creating flying schools and maintenance services to be offered from the airport.[2] In 2016 the Sri Lankan government called for Expressions of Interest to run commercial activities of the Airport as the airport is not generating enough revenue to pay back the loans. Once it has been called "The World's Emptiest International Airport" by Forbes[3][4] due to its low number of flights despite the large size of the airport. However in 2020, newly elected Sri Lankan Government scrapped the negotiations with India to run the airport as a joint venture.[5] During COVID 19 Pandemic, Airport has seen increase in traffic due to repatriation, charter and seafarer flights.

Excellent airport with huge potential. Government should try and make it work rather than letting foreign countries control over it !

Good staff , government should interfere to address the low incoming and outgoing aircraft problems. By a single visit I understand it's great potential for growth.

one of the two international airports in sri lanka. The main runway is 3.8km long and capable of accommodating larger airliners such as airbus A380. Good access roads from all around.
