Great Historic location, previous visitors include the Teutonic Knights, Ivan the Terrible and the Napoleonic army. Would come back again during the summer. The staff running the location were absolutely amazing and informative.

Such a great place to visit if you are in Cēsīs. You can get to the top of the actual castle tower and see the gorgeous view of Cesis Castle Park. Also, you are allowed to get on top of the tower in new castle (museum) and it gives you amazing view of Cesis. Make sure you visit the Castle and it's surroundings. Such a great holiday especially if sun is out and weather is good. You will definitely enjoy your trip if you get into the castle and it's area. Furthermore, you can explore the museum and see the history of Cesis and time people lived in.

Really good fun, you can explore the large turret by candlelight, before going to a sizable museum. The museum had slightly limited information in English, although each room had a card which provided the important information and the exhibits were still interesting. The tower is definitely the j I highlight though!

Had a great experience exploring the castle. There are many things in the castle, worth the admission price. Highly recommend visiting the old castle.

Friendly and helpful staff. Excellent exhibitions. Would like information in English on the exhibitions instead of a separate set of papers.

Cēsis Castle is one of the most iconic and best preserved medieval castles in Latvia. The foundations of the castle were laid 800 years ago by the Livonian Brothers of the Sword. The most prosperous period Cēsis Castle experienced was during its next owners, the Teutonic Order. It became one of the key administrative and economic centers of the Teutonic Order in Livonia and was a seat of Landmeister in Livland. The first serious damage was done to the castle during the Livonian War, when it was besieged by the army of Ivan the Terrible. In the course of the siege of 1577 approximately 300 people within the castle committed mass suicide by blowing themselves up with gunpowder.Cēsis Castle was still in use during the following century but it fell into disuse after the Great Northern War. Today the castle is the most visited heritage site in Cēsis and one of the 'must see' destinations in the Baltic states.

Very nice castle, perfect with children. You will need a candle to go through dark stairways.

It's a well renovated old caste. I really enjoyed that we could visit it with a lantern so the experience was much more authentic than if there were lights.

Amazing! The castle is in very good condition and you can feel the history in the walls as you walk through from room to room in this huge castle. The attention to detail is breathtaking.
The garden is also very very nice with roses from all over the world, maze and tunnels with grapes hanging in the walls and from above.
There is elevator inside the castle and there is golf cars outside to take you around the garden if your legs are tired.
Recommend going in the morning and include Bauska castle the same day as it is nearby. This is a must see attraction on your visit to Latvia. Recommended!

One of the main hallmarks of Cēsis, located right next to the lovely old city. There are two objects there next to each other - the old and the new castle. The entry fee was very reasonable and the exposition - very extensive. We only had 2 hours to spend there and it wasn't nearly enough, had to skip some objects and could not take up all the information offered.
It is also possible to climb on top of both the new and the old tower for an excellent view of the Cēsis city.
One disadvantage for foreign visitors to the castle could be the fact that in some of the rooms there's a lot of great info in Latvian, while in other languages there are just some summarizing paragraphs offered.

A fraction of the site would be worth the 4€ admission. Huge place - I actually got briefly lost I side one of the multi-story towers. One corner includes free games and play equipment for kids and adults. Far and away the best part about visiting Cesis.

The Old Castle is truly amazing, with very little restoration. Which is why the atmosphere is outstanding. You will get an old lantern and will be welcomed by nice animation. Don't forget to visit the blacksmith.

A good museum which represents the history of Cēsis very well. It's located in the new Cēsis castle , and is next to the 800 year old Cēsis castle ruins.
