When you travel from Puebla to the volcanoes, take the road around the mountain it's an asphalt road in good condition. We went straight from Puebla to Paso De Cortes which is a dirt road in very bad condition. When you get to the parking lot you can take multiple hikes with different lengths. We took the one to La Joyita (6,5km one way) which gives very nice views on both volcanoes. The condition of the path is decent but the altitude and air make it a bit difficult. Highly recommended when you're looking for a day trip from a Puebla!

Beautiful nature area. Second and third highest peaks in Mexico.
Not all the hiking roads are well marked (tried to attempt Amalacaxco trail, which got "lost" after the antenna- somewhere half way. For safety reason returned the same way.) The entrance to the park is 54 pesos at the hut at Paso de Cortes. Road up from Amecameca is very good. Other roads are dirt roads.

The gateway to one of the world's most amazing natural parks, home of the Iztaccihuatl and the Popocatépetl, must visit at least once in your life , the beauty of the mountains has left me speechless.
A community center with access registrations and a tiny museum is all you will find here , the fun stuff comes after.

Awesome for Hikes but the view at the albergue is worth the drive even if you don’t hike

The road to this location from the west is paved and popular amongst motorcyclists. The road to this location from the east is unpaved and rough but passable even by sedans, though I wouldn't drive my sedan on this road! Elevation is 3705m. Great views of the snow-capped mountain to the north.

Spectacular place to visit. Views o Ittzacihual, Popo, Citlatepetl, etc. Plus the history. Stay long enough to see Popo have a small explosion. Outstanding!
