Franciscan Monastery

The foundations of the Franciscan Monastery were laid by the Templar knights and monks in 1169. In the 13th century it was taken by Franciscans. During the Turkish time, it was turned into a mosque. This is a rare place in the world where you can see a mosque and a church in the same building. There is one of the oldest Gothic frescoes from the 15th century there. Also, a library from the 15th century can be found here. It is assumed that the first hospital in Panonia was founded here. A lot of stories can be revealed if you visit this magnificent place and you are lucky to find a guide.

Origins can be traced to the 12th century. In 1169, canons from the knighthood Order of the Holy Sepulchre built a small church in the Romanesque style. They used some building materials from much older previous edifices. Franciscans took over the church in 1300. In the second half of the 14th century, the Franciscans expanded it, forming a monastery. The inner corridors are designed to practically form the cubes. Franciscans added the tall bell tower and the monastery building, all in the Gothic style. A nice, Renaissance style sink is still preserved. The monastery was surrounded by a moat and the walls with towers, as was the usual for the monasteries in Hungary at the time. After the Ottoman conquest, the monastery was converted to a mosque in the 16th century. Some of the Ottoman adaptations still remain, like the south wall's mihrab - a niche in the wall that indicates the direction of Mecca. With the withdrawal of the Ottomans, the Franciscans returned in the 17th century.
The present appearance of the complex dates from the 1734-1768 period. Visually, the monastery is today a combination of Gothic, Romanesque and Classicist architecture.

Crusaders, Byzantines, Franciscans, Croats, Germans, Ottomans... A place of rich history and a mixture of different cultures. A must for medieval history fans!

Самостан је један од најстаријих објеката у Војводини. Импресиониран сам знањем свештенијка који води посетиоце кроз здање. Изузетно добро познаје историју самостана, Бача, тврђаве и региона у целини, те посетиоцима објашњава глобалне односе у свету током средњег века и њихову рефлексију на живот и развој у Бача. Предлажем да се приликом доласка у Бач прво посети самостан, па тек након тога тврђава и остала здања.

Pravi dragulj Bača, koji spolja izgleda lepo, ali iznutra krije još veću lepotu i bogatstva. Ljubazni fra Josip nas je sproveo kroz samostan i pokazao nam mnoge lepote koje se u njemu nalaze, poput antičkih temelja, neprocenjive ikone Bogorodice, mihraba (iz doba Osmanlija), etnološke zbirke šokačke odeće...

Veoma ljubazno nas primio franjevac i proveo kroz crkvu. Imao milion zanimljivih priča i činjenica, istorija,religija, kultura i običaji. Na svako naše pitanje dao odgovor. Nezaobravno iskustvo.

Samostan je trenutno u renoviranju. Prekrasan je primerak romaničke gradnje. Obavezno se vraćamo da posetimo kada bude gotovo renoviranje.

Subota,oko podne,a mi smo dobili potpuno neočekivan doček i bogat prikaz istorijskog i duhovnog stanja ovog samostana iz 6.veka. Verovatno smo imali sreće,a bili smo i zainteresovani pa se domaćin potpuo posvetio predstavljanju samostana.

Divno staro mesto u koje rado odem sa decom na dan Sv Antuna padovanskog

Najstariji verski objekat (1169. god prvi pisani zapisi samostana) kojeg su osnovali Kanoninici Sv. Groba Jeruzalemskog (red templara koji se bavio bolesnima). Trenutno u fazi restauracije (700.000e donacije od EU) koju vodi Zavod za zaštitu spomenika Vojvodine.

Kako su izvršili restauraciju zaista je sada lepota i sa još jednim primerom Vojvodina pokazuje kako više stotina godina različiti narodi i nacije mogu ŽIVETI KAO JEDNO!!!

Удивительный монастырь с храмовыми фресками. Покой, уединенность, молитва, искусство.

Volela bih da je bilo otvoreno, ali nismo pogodili vreme 🤷🏼‍♀.

Franjevacki samostan, star preko 800 godina, prva bolnica na zapadu u vreme krsaskih ratova, univerzitet u 17 veku ,vredi posetiti...

Jedan od najstarijih samostana u Vojvodini. Navodno su ga napravili vitezovi Templari, sada ga koriste Franjevci.
