Colorado’s oldest church. What a beautiful and solemn place to visit. Highly recommend visiting even if you aren’t Roman Catholic. Did not attend a mass or event but walked the grounds and was able to walk around inside too. What an amazing and beautiful piece of Colorado and church history.

Thank you for opening your beautiful church to visitors. It’s a tranquil space for reflection amid the breathtaking windows. The altar is lovely. I appreciate your willingness to share your space with me.

Such a phenomenal & humbling place. That a church (or any building for that matter) can still be used in a loving way such as this is humbling.
Beautiful church. Inside, I felt as if I was actually in Mexico. Very Catholic.....VERY.

Oldest church in Colorado.
Our Lady of Guadalupe, according to tradition, selected the spot where the settlement was made. According to legend, Spaniards were traveling over this territory in the San Luis Valley when one of the mules in the pack-train balked. Persuasion, threats, beatings, all were of no avail in making the mule proceed. A small statue of Our Lady of Guadalupe was found in the mule’s pack. The Spaniards, men of faith, decided that the Blessed Virgin must want a church built in her honor, and dedicated to Our Lady of Guadalupe. When the vow to build a church on this exact spot was made, the mule, apparently satisfied, balked no more, and went jogging along with the rest of the mule train. True to their word, the Spaniards returned and brought along several others. An adobe church was built and dedicated to Our Lady of Guadalupe. For more than a hundred years God has been worshiped and Our Lady revered in this frontier church of the West.

I stopped by to grab a few exterior photos. Masks are required for entrance and I wasn't prepared. But the exterior is beautiful with peaceful surroundings. There is street parking and it's easy to find from the main road.

What a wonderful piece of Colorado history! The oldest church in Colorado. It was a temporary shelter when first sacraments were given in 1837. An Adobe structure was built in 1844. Finally the cornerstone of this building was set in 1857. It is breathtakingly beautiful with the stonework and stained glass! You must stop!

Wonderful attraction in the rural southwest! We were guided by the caretaker of the building on a Sunday afternoon. He told us wonderful history of the fires and restoration the building has been through. It is still. Live and functioning congregation today and we enjoyed the art.

The priest is wonderful. He was very welcoming going throughout the whole church asking people where they are from. Greeting them and welcoming them back again. He has done this everytime we have been there. We just love it here when we are visiting the area we always make a point to go to church here.

This is an historic gem located near Alamosa Colorado, and is billed as the oldest church in Colorado. It's beautiful at sunset, but if it's open/during business hours it is a must-see.
